YNAB 3…the Register’s Working…

For all you people waiting to be able to run YNAB Pro on your Mac (and Linux)…

Taylor sent me a screenshot today of the first looks of the Register in an AIR App. I became giddy. Sure, only a few things work on it, but you could navigate from the Register to the Budget…

Everything’s still subject to visual change…

Next Gen of YNAB Pro

The back-end programming is all very much in there. We just have to put a pretty face on it. I wouldn’t say it’s the equivalent of practicing and practicing for your play and then just having to apply the stage makeup…there’s more to it than that. But we’re getting there.

I’m a little out of touch with this stuff, but since the new app is written in Adobe Air, does that mean that it could potentially be run from a website?

Wvery geeked about this version. In just three months of (correctly) using ynab, we are alreadyseeing a difference. We are paying one of our cars off this month and working on really saving for futures projects and goals. Being able to do all that on my Mac will only make it sweeter!!

Liking forward to the beta!

Looks good! Can’t wait for it to be ready. Awesome idea to use AIR as platform.

A thought had the other day: Once this is ready, it’d be REALLY cool if you could build a Dashboard widget that would allow me to enter my register items and would then be loaded into YNAB (without opening it up!).

Glad to see it is coming along. My fiancee and I are devotees and are now expecting a child in August. I’m a Mac and she’s a PC so we are excited to be able to use it on both formats. There is no way- I mean it- that we would be able to sleep at night without YNAB. It is the single most empowering piece of software that we have used. She is getting her MBA at UCLA/Andersen and asked the other day if there is a YNAB for business, “‘Cause that is what a lot of them could use right now.” I can’t even begin to imagine a corporation or small business empowering themselves as we have with a such a “simple” tool. Best of luck and thanks again for your hard work.

Elizabeth

Really excited to not have to run my virtual machine to be able to go from my PC to my MacBook. I do hope it loads quicker than the Wondows version, but I love LOVE the program.

Trevor
April 9, 2009

I had never heard of Adobe AIR, so I went to Adobe’s sit to check it out. Downloaded a free eBay AIR application to play around and see what its like. It actually looks pretty cool. If YNAB looks similar, this should be a great solution to solve the multi-OS problems.

I was hoping the snippet was more than just a logo — but I hope its ready sooner than later.

@Chris, congrats on knocking out one of the car debts this month!

Jesse
April 9, 2009

@Burney, I couldn’t agree more. What should have been done last June is now still quite an undertaking. I am happy to report that we’ve been able to self-fund — which has meant a lot to me. Though I’ll be the first to admit that going slow enough to afford it has been very, very tough at times.

To everyone’s questions about pricing — I haven’t worked that out yet, but I’ll work something up and let everyone know as soon as it’s set in place.

Oh, and about data migration. It’ll be seamless from either Basic or Pro.

Just keeping the PC alive for YNAB. After 2 years of using YNAB I can not go back. I have seen other applications written in AIR, its stunning.

I’m very excited and can’t wait to get my hands on it. But take your time to get it right.
Thanks for the update.

Leigh
April 10, 2009

Really looking forward to your completion. Thanks for keeping us updated, it helps. A request from one of your longstanding clients …..please please can it accommodate and function with multiple currencies. It is something that has forced me look to other software and I have noted other YNABers on the blog with the same requests. The world is such that many people now have live/work configurations that require inputting and computing home budgets in different currencies. eg Paid in 1 currency but living in another country. Or have a work assignment in 1 country of whatever length and the rest of your accounts at home in another.I have done considerable research on this and although there is budgeting software that addresses it, no one has done it well. One of the appealing traits about your mandate and product is that you do things differently and better. Thanks!

Eric
April 10, 2009

I’m using YNAB Basic on my computer which runs Linux and it works just fine. That being said, however, I can’t wait for it to come out for Linux and see just how cool it is to use pro with that. Very cool and thank you so much for all of your hard work. When it comes to money, YNAB knows what it’s talking about no matter what platform it’s running on. I use YNAB for every single dollar I spend, whether Checking, Savings, Cash, anything. I actually don’t have any credit cards and no credit but the way I see it, if I budget wisely and use YNAB, I just can’t go wrong. Of course, the point is to follow the 4 rules which I am serious enough about, that I do.

Jesse: Like many others who have posted to this blog, I have waited patiently–and sometimes not so patiently–for YNAB Pro for Mac. I’m currently operating on Quicken 2006 for Mac, because I have one of those old Macs operating on the pre-Intel architecture. I hope this won’t prevent me from using the new YNAB Pro for Mac.(???) It must feel great knowing that you’re the developer of a product that touches so many lives, effecting them for the better. Kudos to you and your development team! — Chris

I have been using YNAB on PC for 6 months. My Dad surprised us with an iMac. It was only a few minutes later when I literally started to feel panicky… the realization that I wouldn’t be able to use YNAB on my new iMac! So…. it will stay in the box until I can get my hands on a copy of YNAB Pro for Mac. Thank you for your hard work…. really, keep working on it… looking so forward to this!!!

Looks good! I cannot wait to be able to run it on my Mac. I am trying to get by with scheduling all of our paychecks for the month to come into Quickbooks on the last day of the month – quick and dirty, but it is just not the same as the YNAB Pro software that the videos show on the site.

Thanks for the preview!

I love that so many Mac users also use YNAB. Maybe there’s a correlation — a PhD thesis in the making?

Anyway, not that I dislike Excel, but I also love that we’re to get a version soon that will run on our machines AND be pretty and simple. Sweet. Thanks Jesse and new-Pro team!

Way To Go, Jeff…… Been Waiting For The Mac Version OF YNAB Because I Just Know It’s Going To Be A Winner With Mac Users Especially With Me Which Is Why I’ve Been Pushing A Pencil On Paper From Month To Month Figuring My Monthly Budget Instead Of Purchasing Another Budgeting Software Program While Waiting For The Completion Of YNAB PRO for Mac Users. Can’t Wait Till The Day Comes When You Stand With Scissors In Hand Cutting The Red Ribbon To Announce The YNAB PRO For Mac Is Hear For Sale.

April 23, 2009

Very cool! I’ve been trying to decide between the spreadsheet and Pro versions of YNAB (I use MS Money on WinXP primarily), but I just recently picked up a Linux-based netbook and would really like to be able to use YNAB Pro on it. I don’t mind spreadsheets, but YNAB Pro has those handy automation features and pretty charts…

;)

Will there be separate pricing for each Pro platform version, or will one Pro license give you access to the Windows, Linux, and Mac editions?

I have been desperately searching for the right application/service to get my expenses under control. I’ve tried just about everything under the sun; I am fed up with Quicken, Quicken Online, Mint, Mvelopes, etc. etc. etc. I have been so discouraged entering the same data in, creating all the new categories, etc for each new application to find out that it doesn’t really do budgeting. Mvelopes was the closet, but I didn’t care for their interface, it wasn’t compatible with my bank (initially) and the subscription fee really turned me off.

As a Mac user with friends who have really talked up YNAB, I am very excited to hear that the more robust YNAB software is coming to OS X. Now I cannot wait to get my hands on it and finally get a handle on my financial life. Really looking forward to it! I selfishly hope the release is right around the corner!
