Alright, we’ve done a lot since I last showed a sneak peek of YNAB 3. Here are a few more:
Register (search, optional columns)
When will we release?
All I can say is that we’re tracking well for a 2009 release. Private beta will begin shortly, and after a bit in there, we’ll move to Public beta where you can purchase YNAB 3 at a discount and start using the software. By the time we move to public beta, the software will be in excellent shape, so no worries there!

So beautiful Jesse – I can see I’m going to need time off just to drool over YNAB3 when it comes out.

That is great. I look forward to using it on my mac.
I am curious about the pricing especially for us who already have the previous version.
Thanks,

How do I get a beta version for the MAC? I don’t have a PC anymore and I can’t run my YNAB, I can’t
even find my file…

I have never, ever looked forward to the release of a piece of software before. Ever. Until now. And my anticipation and excitement over YNAB3 is almost embarrassing. I can’t wait!
Thanks for the sneak peeks. Everything looks so great.
If you’re still looking for private beta users, please consider me.

Awesome!! Those are the very features I have been waiting for! It looks incredible. You are doing a fantastic job. Thanks for the screencast, it helps remind me that it will be worth the wait. Less than 7 weeks to go!

Fabulous! I have nearly bought a PC (banish the thought!) just to run YNAB. I can’t wait to have your wonderful program on my Mac! It looks incredible! Thank you, thank you, thank you for listening to your Mac fans!

Looks great!
What would really help YNAB to be a better product is if there were a web solution and you could do YNAB updates from work, from different computers at home, on a internet cafe, on airports and so on. I would really love that feature. Or is it already possible?

Will current YNAB users get an upgrade price?

November 13, 2009
It seems you’re getting rid of the terms “Primary” and “Supplemental” income. I saw “Available Next Month” (or something). I think that’s a good move since it’s one of the things that new users often get confused about.
Love the interface, btw. It’s like a playground for grown-ups. :)

Jesse, it really looks like you and your team have given YNAB3 much thought, thank you.
Will transactions always looked grayed out in the register, or will they be shown in a black text if so desired? Also same for balances at the bottom of the register will there be a way to darken the text a bit?
Thanks again and I am looking forward to the preorder of YANB3 soon.

For a year now I’ve been saying that the next computer I buy will be a Mac. But no kidding, the one thing that’s been stopping me is the lack of a YNAB Mac version. Well my hand got forced this week when my laptop died and I am now the proud owner of a new iMac and I am so happy that I won’t have to give up my YNAB even if I have to wait a little while!

Oh wow! The reporting is awesome and very flexible. I’m so glad I took the plunge to get Pro now (even if I have to run it via VirtualBox).

It still needs a magical “free money” button. But, apart from that glaring omission, it looks great ;-)

Will we continue to be able to do most anything with keyboard commands? The reason I ask is in the register I saw a circle+ to “add new transaction…” but no indication of a keyboard command (previously a ctrl+n). I imagine there will be, but just checking. Moving from mouse to keyboard is a pain for many of us (literally, if you have carpal tunnel syndrome)! Looking svelt, Jesse and crew. Thanks for keeping an eye on the screen real estate. Eye candy is nice for the short term “wow”, but less helpful the more you use software.

Can’t wait! I’m looking forward to dumping Vista from my MAC. I made a dual boot system just so I could run YNAB. I have to keep reminding myself all good things come to those who wait :)

This looks great, I’m so excited about it (and I don’t know if I’ve ever been particularly excited about the release of a piece of software) and looking forward to using it myself! I’m really looking forward to getting off my Windows computer – YNAB is now the only software I’m sill using on it, and that computer is in a process of failing. I’m really hoping it holds out until the YNAB 3 Beta is released! :-)

Dude, you guys are killing it. That is some freaking awesome software. I’m just like the rest of the guys, just can’t wait. The word is going to spread so fast about this, I hope you can keep up with the business. Great job! WOW!!!!

Will reporting let you do things like allow you to see for a given month what categories you overspent in vs. target? Or conversely, what categories you underspent in, so that you could consider readjusting? Those for me would be the most important things I would like to be able to track.
Looks good.

Hey Phil,
We don’t have a report specifically for that — I’m curious why you wouldn’t just look at your Budget to derive that information though? Do you want the information presented differently?

A Mac owner here. SO EXCITED!! Hurry, hurry, hurry! No pressure though. ;o) Although I’m on the email list to be notified when the beta version comes out, I’ve been checking your website almost every day.

looks good, will there be a “end of year” save close and restart option, I am one of those that like to “close” out last year, name it, save it and open up “fresh” for the new year — hate clutter (at least on the computer). reconcile please have reconcile! the only thing I miss from quicken.

OH – and I forgot – give me that beta!
Thanks for all the hard work Jesse, I’ve been looking for a decent personal finance system for Mac for YEARS, and I’m so anxious to try out YNAB.
Rob
November 13, 2009
@ Magnus you can already do this.
Check out http://www.dropbox.com which will sync files from multiple computers. You install dropbox on all of the computers you want to access YNAB, then put the YNAB file in your Dropbox folder. Then you can access it from anywhere, plus your file is backed up as well (online and on multiple computers). Dropbox is compatible with both Mac and PC (and Linux).

Oh man this looks TOTALLY sweet. I think I’m going to absolutely love it. The reporting is vastly, vastly improved which was the one area I felt YNAB disappointed. But this has me really excited to jump into.

I am also curious about pricing for previous YNAB (PC) users who are looking to switch over to the far superior MAC version when it is ready!

November 14, 2009
Looks fantastic. Hope it handles multi-currency correctly, and will work for us poor British citizens on the other side of the pond who have to handle Pounds Sterling AND Euros.
Will it import correctly from Quicken and/or Microsoft Money and/or Moneydance?

Jesse,
The new program looks great, and coding it so it can be used over any of the three formats, linux, Mac or windows, will help out your customer base.
Looking forward to trying out the beta version!
good luck.

For all of you that are looking for a web solution, I have an online storage that I use that allows me to access my files from home and at the office or anywhere that has internet access provided that the computer has YNAB installed. The service gives you 2Gb of online storage free. Free means free, no trial periods and it’s plenty of space for YNAB files. Check it out. https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTIwMjcwNDg5

Jesse,
The spending report looks good, but I’d like to see the budgeted amount next to it, and if there was a net overage or under spending per category for that month. Being able to print that would be useful for me. Also for printing purpose include a ranking of the top 10 overspent categories by amount per time period you are looking at, to show you where you need to focus. I’m not a user of the program yet (waiting for Mac), so I’m not completely familiar with how the program works, but as it’s a budgeting app, having the ability to print a budget “scorecard” report so to speak, I would think would be very useful.

November 14, 2009
It’s looking good Jesse! Great work.
2 things I’ve been wondering…
1) if you will have the facility in the Register to split your income into different categories (like you can when you are spending money in the 1 transaction, but 2 or more budget categories). ie. You could put your gross amount in & have the tax, any other salary deductions that might get taken out of your pay before you get it (like superannuation, health insurance, charity donations, etc) & it would show your net pay in the actual Register Inflow column. I can do this in MS-Money, & it would be great if YNAB 3 could allow this, so I can toss my old version of MS-Money! :)
Currently in YNAB2 I put all the salary deductions in their own separate line which ends up taking up more space in the register. So if it could be all in the one “transaction” line, that would be great.
2) Another thing I thought of yesterday, when I thought my computer might have bitten the dust (which it didn’t thankfully!)… Would it be possible to get a password onto your YNAB3 data-file?
It could be optional, because I know not everyone would want it. But if I’d had to put my computer in for repair, I wouldn’t like the repairperson possibly stickybeaking into my personal finance data, so a password on the datafile would be handy (even though I already have a password to get into my laptop in the first place).

I bought this software a month ago and I fell in love with it right away. It was exactly what I was looking for and more. Now I have been tracking the new ynab3 screenshots and cannot wait till it comes out.
Jesse your amazing! This is the best software around. The price is very reasonable for your software as well. Great job. Thank you.

November 16, 2009
@Wynne, we don’t have password protection slated for this first release, but it’s on the short list of features to be added post-release :)
Jesse
November 16, 2009
@Clare,
As far as a split being able to represent a paycheck, yes it will. Just as you described actually. To your other question about password protect, it will be in a later release (it’s on our short list).
Jesse
November 16, 2009
@Chip – as many as you’d like actually. Well, I believe we may have set the limit to 18 months…but I’d have to doublecheck to be sure.

How about the ability to download transactions from your bank, YNAB4 perhaps???

If we get the emails re. the sneak peeks, does that mean we’ll get the beta invite when it goes out? Or is that a separate list?

Very nice! From what I’m seeing this software is probably worth a lot more than you are asking, Jesse! Not that I want to pay more but it appears to be very nice…the best budgeting software I’ve ever seen! Of course, I think that already with YNAB Pro! :-)
