As I look at this, the links are crossed; the link labeled “change in look” talks about tooltips and Rule 4, and the link labeled “spent tooltip on steroids and Rule Four” talks about the look and screen organization.
I had a bit of trepidation when I viewed something labled “change in look” and it didn’t mention seeing more than 2 months even though I have unused horizontal space. Fortunately, I was patient enough to wait through the other sneak peek and hear that you didn’t forget that. :)
The demo was great. I was a little hesitant before watching about upgrading to 3 when released but am hesitant no more. Rule 4 flexibility and the hiding of categories has sold me. Thank you so much Jesse. Your team is changing lives!
The things you have added will make such a difference such as the drag and dropping of categories and the hiding of master catergories to name but two.
I thought the old budget screen in YNAB Pro was ok but this looks really nice, can’t wait until it’s released.
Unfortunately I’ll be entering less numbers after my £ :-( but I’ll continue to work on that with YNAB 3.
Looks terrific! You guys have worked hard and it show in a very polished looking app. You have accomplished so many improvements and it is looking like a very mature product.
Perhaps if you beat your developers more their morale would improve and they could finish this thing off much faster. You know, spare the rod – spoil the programmer.
Wow! Thanks for the sneak peek! Everything looks great and I can’t wait to upgrade from Quicken and my quick and dirty sorta kinda YNAB procedure I have been using there. So glad it will be available for the Mac!
Hurry!!! And please put me on your beta testers list. I got very addicted to budgeting with YNAB and knowing exactly how much we were spending and on what. I miss that feeling of control; more than I ever could have imagined. I NEED you to finish YNAB3.
I love it and am patiently waiting. I had to take bootcamp off my mac in order to reclaim some memory and now I can not use YNAB at all. I really am going through withdrawal. My accounts are feeling the pinch too. Please hurry.
In all seriousness, when is YNAB three going to be released?
This looks great. I wish you could include a way to track progress toward a particular spending goal. Right now, I add a note to a category when I need to remind myself that I am saving for a particular goal, but this can easily get overwhelming or just cumbersome. I know that I could create more sub-categories and, for example, make “couch” a sub-category of “furniture,” but I think this would take away the clean look and ease of use. I’m not sure how hard something like this would be to do, but it is such a key aspect of budgeting that I wish you could figure out a way to automate it.
Regardless, thanks for a great product. It’s seriously changed my life. I look forward to 3.0.
@ELS, we sidelined that feature for the 3.0 launch of YNAB 3, but we actually already have it all spec’d and everything, so our plan is to get that in there after the launch as a higher priority item.
WOW! You guys are doing an amazing job! This is turning out so much better than I ever thought it would. I have been sold on this product for about a year now, but ashamedly, haven’t used it like I should, until now. My wife and I just sat down and budgeted things out. We are making the commitment to stick to it this time. I am so pumped about YNAB 3 now, that it’s going to be hard to wait for it. But, I work for a software company and I know quality coding takes time.
Jesse, you have got to be in awe of how far this has come. Pretty amazing to thing that this started out as a “nerdy” spreadsheet with a bunch of bells and whistles. Look at what you’ve done now. I am so very impressed with your methodology, your website, YNAB U, and most importantly, your application.
I will definitely be upgrading to YNAB 3, without a doubt. I’m like a little kid waiting for Christmas when it comes to stuff like this.
Thank you for what you have done to help so many people. You deserve everything good that you get as a result of all this. I am thoroughly impressed. (if you couldn’t already tell…haha)
This looks great! Sounds to me like you’re almost ready to kick butt and take names with this awesome piece of software. Can’t wait to use it on my Mac.
-Peter
P.S. Just one little tiny thing–I know you didn’t show us the register because it wasn’t ready yet. However, I am worried that the individual account amounts won’t run across the top in tabs like they do in 2.9. It looks to me like they may run across the left hand side in these new videos. Maybe I have nothing to worry about–but please include the option for tabs that run across the top!
Wonderfull new design! Double points for the spent tooltip and rule four change. One thing I would like to suggest, at the top and bottom of each month, perhaps we could have a ‘hide details’ button, in the current version I love how I just see the available budget amount and the hover over it for the details, when my wife looks at this I don’t want her to get confused with all the numbers, but I do want to see them since I’m the geek in the house. I tell you, no other software handles the budget the way I handle my budget except for YNAB!
Thanks everyone for the great comments.
@Peter, I really want to hear more about why you want tabs along the top instead of the sides . We were really anxious to move them to the sides because we like that it allows us to show the balances easier and how they all add up, etc. Do you mind posting to the YNAB 3 forum to tell me more about your concerns with tabs on the left? (http://www.youneedabudget.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=38 )
@David We want those headers and footers to be collapsible as well!
Fantastic! I’ve only been using for a month so far but love it! My only negative has been carrying overages to the next month. I budget so much for each category and would rather take from next months grocery budget (for example) than take it out of savings, even though that is technically happened. Your carry-over feature will take away my only complaint. Well…and I’d like more reporting functions but it sounds like those are coming too. Thank you for tweaking this great product!
I’m a mac user and have been drooling over YNAB for over a year now. I just tried my third budgeting software this year and nothing measures up to YNAB. I will suffer thru for now but 2009 is drawing to a close and I’m counting on you! My only concern about YNAB was the rule 4 thing. I like to allow certain categories to take the hit if we overspend and now you’ve addressed that. Awesome! I’m all for Beta testing too, if you need help!!!!
Anxiously awaiting YNAB 3!
Very, very cool stuff! Can’t wait.
That looks great! I can’t wait. I think your links are backwards mixed up though.
I’ve been using the Pro on our Dell, but I’m looking forward to the new version on my Mac.

This looks great! This looks to be a great improvement and looks like it’s going to be much more helpful. Keep up the good work! :)
Looks great. No complaints here. Lots of new features, but still very intuitive and uncluttered design. Looks beautiful.
Nice to see it in action. It looks great. Looking forward to the release :-)

Bring it on! Looks very good. Lot’s of great effort by your team!

Very nice. Thanks for the peak. Man, I gotta get a Mac!

OMG this is so nice!!!!!!!
Looks great, am looking forward to using it on my Mac. YNAB for Excel is getting a bit clunky after a solid few months of use.
Question: in the current version of YNAB Pro, we can import from YNAB for Excel. Will that functionality exist in the new version?
@Jeremy, yes, you’ll still be able to import your YNAB Basic data into YNAB 3 :)
@Subbu, this year :)
Wow! This looks to be a Quicken killer, and so nice for those currently using YNAB. Thanks for the hard work that looks like it will soon pay off! :o)
Wow! thats good. BTW when YNAB 3 is going to be released?
It looks wonderful, Jesse!
hi!
will there be an option to be able to change themes throughout the program? like different color schemes and the like?
I like what I see.
I use YNAB multiple times a day.
The effect will be great. I am looking forward.
Thanx
Ed H
@James: There won’t be an option to change color schemes and themes I’m afraid. But you won’t need it because we’ll have one gorgeous theme. ;)
Now this is what i’m talking about…Awesome preview and like the rest of the people here can’t wait to check it out.
Where do I sign up for beta testing?

PLEEEEAAAASE…I am desperate to try YNAB and am a Mac-only diehard. I don’t even run Parallels! At least let us Beta test!
(I know begging probably doesn’t help, but it’s worth a try…)

I’m so in love with YNAB 3 now!!!
I’ve been longing for that new Rule 4 functionality from the start.
I’m glad it’s being implemented.
Impressive. I use Linux and am certainly hoping to try this out.
Thanks for the great software! I am a brand new user and am very excited with the YNAB 3!!!
