Today we discuss a new initiative I’ll be working on over the next 4-6 weeks. YNAB for Your Small Business.
Please watch the Whiteboard Wednesday and then, if you’re a small business owner (even the smallest of small businesses, full- or part-time! Consultant, freelancer, designer, programmer, realtor, loan officer, etc.), fill out the survey below.
You may be selected as one of six participants. I’ll work with you individually to help you implement YNAB into your small business. This is completely free. I’m doing it for very selfish reasons — I want to learn how I can help people implement YNAB’s principles into a small business setting. The best way to learn how to help is to start helping!
YNAB transforms personal finances.
It can transform business finances.
UPDATE: Thanks to those who have already applied. Just from reading through the applications I’m getting very excited! We will be able to do some great things for your respective ventures! To those who haven’t yet applied, go ahead! It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes :)
This sounds like a cool idea; I like that you’re focused on finding all the places the YNAB method works and not branching out to add a bazillion features.
I already use YNAB for my “micro-business” (less than $100/year) and its nice to know that if it grows beyond a hobby then YNAB will be able to grow with it.
Great idea! I started a small mobile oil change biz a few months ago. Count me in! I earned an accounting degree in college and manage the company’s finances myself. Awesome software would be amazing!
Even if you don’t select me (my biz) to work with, let me know when it’s done; I’ll definitely be interested in seeing the finished product.
Jesse, this is a great idea. Some of us became small business owners against our will — I was laid off a few years ago, and ended up making about as much as a “1099er” as I did when employed, but budgeting has been a challenge. I’m not incorporated, just a sole proprietor in the eyes of the IRS, and all my income goes into one pot. So it’s really important to control every expenditure, be it for private or for business reasons. Do you anticipate that your small business version of YNAB will accomodate such commingled accounts?
I already use YNAB for my SubChapter S corp. I’ve kludged it so it works. I still use Quickbooks also, but I adapted YNAB for the budgeting ability (obviously) and the four principles. Looking forward to participating if chosen.
Would this work with a lawn and landscape company? I would assume so.
Absolutely it would work with landscaping!
I am interested. I recently started using YNAB for our personal budgeting and love it. I would like to see how it would translate into our small business.
OMG!!! This would be great for our small business let me know what we need to do to get on that list!!!
I use YNAB for our business already ( I use it at home as well) – just to keep track so I know on a daily basis exactly how much we have in the bank- as cheques take time etc, to have a YNAB specifically for a business would be great. Please let me know when it is done!

I am SO interested in being able to do this! I hope I get picked!!! I really need help with the business and budgeting aspect of my freelance website/graphic design business.
I am a pediatrician and i have a bookeeper, use quick books but I still feel lost how much is really been spent it certain categories, I think it should work to keep a budget, which is what I am looking for. thank Doris
Hi Jessie,
So what’s the status on this business initiative? This has such huge potential for so many small businesses, including mine!
My husband and I are chiropractors. We also use Quick Books. But it has always been a challenge to budget with fluctuating income both in the business and at home. It would be great if you picked us to walk through using YNAB for our business. We are planning on starting with it at home, get used to it, and then use it with our office. Thanks.
Will you be announcing a Biz enhanced, or Small Biz version soon?
We’re working on some features that will certainly be helpful for small businesses, but not a completely separate version.
What version is needed to use for Biz?
Thanks
AL
Hey Al, you can just use the version you have.
