Dear Budget,
First, I’d like to thank you for all the things you’ve helped me with financially. Thanks to you I paid off the credit card debt and the car, saved for a number of renovations on the house, have more money in the bank, and am debt free (except the mortgage). You’ve certainly been a very dependable friend, and I really appreciate that.
So I want to apologize for ignoring you for the past 2 weeks. I realize that you can’t do this without me and I shouldn’t have abandoned you like that. I want you to know I accept full responsibility for all of this.
I guess I just thought you could fix anything! I mean, it had only been 2 weeks, I didn’t really think it would be that hard to catch things up. It usually only takes me 5 to 10 minutes, but of course, that’s when I update twice a week. I didn’t realize the clean up would take me 2 hours.
Perhaps I didn’t realize that the awareness you offer is meaningless if I don’t pay attention too. Of course – I should know better than this. Our relationship is a two way street and I definitely need to do my part.
I think part of it is that I didn’t realize how transactions would accumulate over that time span, and how that would create more work for me, since I couldn’t remember what anything was for.
A $60 withdrawal on May 25th? What was that for? $49.23 at Wal-mart? Was that all for food? No wait…I was picking up cat food. No wait…that was on the 21st. Wasn’t that a Thursday? But I seem to remember picking up the cat food at Market Basket… Which purchase was for the cat food? What was the other one for? Ugh. I can’t remember. What?!?! I’m overspent on groceries? How did that happen? I thought there was plenty in that category. Oh, I thought I had money set aside for books, but I guess I didn’t. Shoot, now I’m overspent there as well. That purchase really could have waited.
Sigh. I realize now that even though I was busy during the last few weeks, it still would have been quicker to stay on top of things. It took far longer to sort this out than it would have to just find 5 minutes to update you twice a week.
I probably wouldn’t feel nearly as guilty if it wasn’t for the fact that you make it so easy to stay on top of things. If I only had taken advantage of importing transactions, or being more consistent about entering purchases into the iphone app, this never would have happened.
And finally, thanks for helping me clean this little mess up. Importing all those transactions saved me a ton of time and made things go much faster. You reconciled everything for me on the first try. Obviously, I couldn’t expect you to know how to categorize everything since I forgot what most of the purchases were for in the first place. But that’s not your fault. I need to do a better job of keeping you informed.
I appreciate your flexibility as well in letting me move some funds around to cover some things. It’s a little sad that I have less money for the vacation now, but I have no one to blame except myself. At least thanks to you, I had some funds that I could move around. What would I do without you?
I promise to do a better job from now on and I won’t abandon you like that again. Not only do you deserve better, but frankly, I just can’t afford to not do my part.
Thanks for making me aware of that. :)
Sincerely, your friend,
Erin
Nice letter…so many of us try to stick to a budget but fail. We need to establish one but follow through on it as well. Without the follow through it’s not much good.
great post! Can you make an app for the palm pre?
Or for the Android phones?
Too funny!!
I had my first 10 day lapse and had just worked on my budget last night for about 2 hours. I struggled to remember some of my spending splits and cash spent (since I misplaced my debit card.) I thought you guys has some way of knowing and sent me this email this morning. Timing was perfect.
We are indeed planning on developing an app for the Android, and hopefully other mobile platforms! We’ll have more details as we progress!
What great timing! Thanks for the reminder…it’s literally been two weeks for me (or more)! Ahhh. Thanks again for the newsletter. =)
…and the BlackBerry….?
Looking forward to Android version!
BlackBerry!
Nice post as I sit here apologizing to my budget as well.
Cant wait for the Driod app!!
I vote for palm pre app.
Loved the post. S o o o o true.
What a great post! I’ve just spent two days catching up with my budget so it’s kinda upset with me right now…..they say you only hurt the ones you love!
HOW DID YOU KNOW
????
Very well written. Kudos
I love my budget!! My budget keeps me on-track financially, I always know where every dollar goes, and how much I can afford. No more financial chaos, no out-of-control feeling! Yes, I do have to check-in with my friend frequently (actually I do it daily usually) and make sure all is well but I actually enjoy doing it with YNAB. Thank you YNAB!
Spent 2 hours last night doing exactly that after neglecting you for 2 weeks, promise it wont happen again. Any chance of getting a black board on the next release so I can write out my penance.
I promise to not neglect you again
I promise to not neglect you again
I promise to not neglect you again
I promise to not neglect you again
I promise to not neglect you again
I promise to not neglect you again
….
i would really like for ya’ll to make a app for the windows mobile phone the omnia a ynab program for it. i really like my phone and its apps. i am currently using cash orginizer and i have to transfer my stuff to the ynab program on my pc.
thanks it is helping me, even though its been hard to stick to it.
Thanks for the comments folks. The important thing I think is to keep at it and keep moving forward. Even with this little blip on the radar, I am STILL way better off budgeting. And the budget forgives quickly. :) We’ve been pretty tight for a while before this happened. :)
I vote for Android. Adobe Air for Android is in dev preview…
Were you peeking over my shoulder?
Thanks for such a great letter, and thanks also for the iPad/iPhone app. It is awesome, so I really have no excuses – except laziness.
Thanks again Erin, and of course Jesse.
What if you’ve neglected your friend for over a month or more? How do I get my relationship back? Should I just start over with a clean slate? I hate myself!
You reconciled everything for me on the first try – really? Then why do I have SO many problems with reconciliation?
Great posts. Saving receipts really helps. I actually prefer to put the transactions in. The time really makes me think about how much I spent where, and wonder, was it really worth it? Anyway, thanks for making it so easy to create and stick to a budget. Thanks to ynab we were able to buy a car when our car broke down, with no car payment :)
@Teresa – It’s hard to say whether or not you should start over or not, that’s up to you. The first 6 months I used YNAB I started over 3 times. It wasn’t YNAB as much as my own learning curve as I let go of old habits and built new ones. We offer a free Budget Workshop class where I help people set up their first budget. This would work for restarts too. Check out the dates on the coaching page.
@Tawnia – I’m not sure why you are struggling with reconciliation. What kind of problems are you having? Have you checked the inline help for assistance?
Your email freaked my husband out… how did YNAB know that we weren’t up to date? Is our computer dobbing us in? lol
I had actually just caught up after three weeks, and learned a very valuable lesson the hard way. I did literally spend two hours catching up… got the transactions downloaded and categorised (quite a bit of miscellaneous spending!), viewed the result on the budget and then ARRGGHH!!! my computer froze *&%@#!! I had to reboot the computer and when I opened my YNAB file … all my hard work had vanished. It took me an hour the next evening to do it all again… and now I save every five minutes!
I would LOVE to have YNAB on my Blackberry … please :)
I too have let my budget slide a little – I haven’t updated it for this last week yet. My excuse is that I’ve been assessing home & contents insurance policies & they keep sending me to sleep! :D
