Full iPhone App is In Review, YNAB Lite, and the Kindle Fire

Quick update here.

Yesterday the full iPhone app went into review! It’s still in review and we have high hopes it’ll pass this time. We were heartened to see it go back into review after having to submit a new binary over the weekend.

And as a bonus, the Lite app also went into review.

We also submitted the latest Android version (available on Google Play) to the Amazon app store. It should play nice with Android phones and the Kindle Fire.  It’s been submitted, but by now you guys know the drill. We wait for the review to happen :)

Thanks to all of you for your glowing review of YNAB Lite! We really appreciate it.  The next update that’s coming through will fix a few issues that nailed us on the 1.0 release.

  1. Fingers, toes, and anything else that I can cross is now in crossed mode. Let’s hope the review time is short. In the mean time, the Lite version works exceptionally well.

  2. Ooh, didn’t think about the Kindle Fire. Question, if I’ve purchased the iPhone app but want to use it on my Kindle, do I need to purchase the Android app separately?

    • You definitely do – they are different platforms entirely. The iPhone is iOS and the Kindle Fire is a modified Android device.

I have the full iPhone app and am anxiously awaiting the approval so that I can upgrade to YNAB 4, since I use my iPhone heavily to enter transactions on the go. I also have a Kindle Fire running the Amazon appstore version of YNAB. I also can’t wait for that update to be approved also, but personally, I would be OK waiting a while for that version, since my primary mobile device is the iPhone. I’m really anxious to try cloud sync for my and my husband’s iPhones!

  3. Jesse,

Thanks for keeping us informed. I am looking forward to the full App. I am finding so many new features everyday as I use YNAB4. What a GREAT budget software!!!!!!

    Thanks,

    Jeff

  4. Jesse – thank you for all of the updates. I’m sure you’re happy to see the ‘lite’ at the end of the tunnel (see what I did there?)

BTW, was syncing the same budget with multiple i-devices one of the issues being addressed? I emailed support about it on Sunday and have not heard back …

    • Hi Dave,
Syncing between multiple devices should work just fine. I see your case is assigned to one of our developers, so I’ll ping them on it.

    • Splits are on our short list, and we have code written and are actively working on geo-aware Payees to speed transaction entry significantly.

    • I appreciate the updates too, but it doesn’t leave a great impression in my opinion. I know Apple doesn’t make app approvals easy, but this whole app realease debacle is a result of extremely poor planning.

Despite the horrendous software release planning and leaving customers in a state of limbo, I love the product. It has helped improve my personal finances. Hopefully lessons are learned for YNAB 5…

      • Yeah, we definitely would do things very differently if I could do it over again. Internally, it’s been a nightmare I don’t wish to repeat. We basically gave ourselves a lot more work during launch, where there was already a lot more work.

If I could do it over again, we’d be launching YNAB 4 next Tuesday.

    • Not at this time. The economics of that market don’t yet work out for us. Hopefully that market grows to support it.

  5. Thanks ynab team for all the surport on making ynab 4 and thank you for the update on putting ynab 4 on kindle fire
    Keep up the good work

  6. Thanks for the update! Every time I see the little red icon on my iPhone indicate a new app to be updated, I get all excited, hoping to see the YNAB icon there with a fresh new update. But no, it’s always the 50 other apps I never use… LOL

    • I got so excited a few minutes ago looking at my update screen and seeing the YNAB icon–but it was the lite update, not the full. What is with Apple and this app?

  7. Hi Jesse and crew,
I love YNAB and use the iPhone app all the time. Here’s a forward looking question- Are you guys priming to dive into NFC (near field communications) as it rolls out into the various mobile devices so that we can close the loop on manually entered transactions? I think it would (or will) be awesome to wave your mobile device at the point of sale and have it 1) pay for your purchase and, 2) log the transaction in YNAB. Am I dreaming here, or do you see this happening?

    • We may be dreaming as well, but we pay pretty close attention there to see if there’s any service that offers some sort of pinging ability, so YNAB could be notified immediately of a charge. I’d want it to prompt you and tell you what your new category balance was…you know, be a little in your face about the spending :)

  8. Well, The Lite update apparently flew through the review process and has been released already. In the meantime, still nothing for the full version. Hope it’s not yet another bad omen.

  9. Installed the latest Lite app.

This crashed when updating latest changes to the budget.

Submitted report when I was prompted to do so. Hope this gives you guys some decent debug info.

  10. Just retired last month and started on YNAB3 in preparation in March. Budgeting on YNAB started out as a necessity and ended up becoming a hobby! Do I need to get a life now? Anyway, Jesse, you have a fine product, a great team, and your optimism and energy show through what you do. Thanks for taking the trepidation out of having our income cut in half, lol. No seriously. Thank you and God bless!

  11. First version of YNAB lite would crash before syncing…..just downloaded “fix” and I AM SYNCED! YAY you guys are awesome!!!!!

  12. I’m I the only one who gets completely annoyed when people leave a negative review because they don’t know how to read? There is a review bashing the app because you can’t cloud sync it with YNAB3, another negative review because they can’t see the account view (which is in the full addition) and don’t understand what the point of a budget app is if you can’t see how much money you have in the bank and keep from going over. I can’t even go into all the things wrong with that last what. The point is, THAT’S THE WHOLE POINT! Stop looking at your account balance.

People shouldn’t be allowed to leave uninformed reviews. It infuriates me.

    • I agree. I saw those reviews and the YNAB team clearly states you need YNAB4 to use the app. The comment about the account balances is irrelevant as you stated. If you do need to see a balance, just click the “account” when adding transactions and you can see your account balances.

The great thing is that it has many many many great reviews from the people that can read and do follow the YNAB steps.

  13. Sadly, two of the three negative reviews came from people who obviously failed reading comprehension in school. The “shortcommings” that the complained about were clearly detailed on both the YNAB site and in the app description on iTunes. They apparently never heard the term “Reading is Fundamental”. The third negative review was by someone who was affected by the Pre YNAB debt syncing when the app was first released. despite the fact that the YNAB team fixed that problem immediately, and despite the fact that individual gave YNAB a big thank you in a blog posting, that person never had the courtesy to go back to iTunes and change the rating.

  14. I too hope that no news is good news, but four days in review status is starting to look less and less promising.

  15. Weird, I don’t see the full app available in the iTunes store yet, but if I click on the link that Jesse provided, I am taken to the full app for download.

  16. I’m currently working in London, UK and it popped up here a couple of hours ago. Guess it’s working it’s way east to west:-)
