Here’s a roundup of August’s podcasts. We’re excited for what we have slated in September! Some ‘Zen-like’ stuff coming!
- 046 – You’re Never Really Saving Money… - You’re not really saving money. You’re simply acknowledging future expenses.
- 047 – How Much Money Does it Take to Be Happy? - The study says $70,000 and it’s gotten me thinking about downsizing. Not the house really, just in general. Though nothing’s off the chopping block just yet.
- 048 – Achieving Money Zen. An Interview with Leo Babauta of ZenHabits.net - I LOVED doing this interview! Leo really helped me think through priorities, gaining clarity, and determining what matters. I’m more zen-like because of it :)
- 049 – The New Retirement. An Interview with Todd Tressider of FinancialMentor.com - Todd was a panelist at FinCon12, where the topic was the new retirement. I was impressed by Todd’s analytical approach, and approachableness (is that a word?) on the topic. He also managed to find financial freedom by age 35. And by “find”, I mean work his tail off to get there.

So I listen to the new podcast to learn that Jesse is a CrossFitter. I started YNABing because my CrossFit membership was a big expense and I needed a way to take control of my spending and fit this expense in my monthly jobs for my dollars.
I am on a break from the box until I get some debt taken care of and a buffer built. But it already has a category in my budget.
Hi Jesse,
I’ve really been enjoying the Podcasts, listened to them all since the beginning. They feel like a great use of my time driving to work, it’s nice to be learning something.
On an earlier blog post you said to mention any podcast discussion requests and I have one. I am interested in starting up a home business or a side business because I am a seasonal worker and I have parts of the year when I have a lot of time on my hands and I would like to put this to good use. I have a lots of different ideas some seem a little unrealistic and would be very easy for an outsider to dismiss but then I am reminded about your own story with the YNAB spreadsheet and how you received and initially less than enthusiastic response from those around you.
So some bullet points: Formulating your business idea, finding a niche, when to make the leap from fulltime work to your own business, getting started in general, initial success and failure, motivation and overcoming failure, your progress from your initial business idea with a time frame of how the first few years developed. That kind of thing.
While not strictly related to budgeting I feel this might fit in with the general YNAB philosophy because while you have discussed many topics about controlling costs and minding money on the other side of the equation of building wealth is increasing income.
Yours is a seemingly good example of a side enterprise/2nd job being turned into a reasonable living and I think there might be those of us out there that could learn something.
P.S Bring back the YNAB book club in the forums. I’ve been learning a ton from Dave Ramseys reading list like “The Millionaire next door”
Thanks!
Great podcasts! I listen to them when driving around as some brain-food… Just want to say great job!
