YNAB 4: Net Worth Report

What?! There’s a new version of YNAB coming? Yes. It’s YNAB 4, and it’s awesome. If you missed the announcement, you can catch it here. We talk about pricing, availability, etc.

The whole reports section got an entire revamp, and gained some great new reports to boot. In this post, I’ll highlight the Net Worth Report.

The purpose of this report is to give you an idea on your overall progress toward your goals. If your net worth is going up, that’s a good thing.

In the gray box you have all sorts of filters you can employ to get an accurate picture of your net worth. Perhaps you want to exclude certain accounts …that’s no problem at all:

As you hover over a month in the chart, you’ll see the legend change, telling you exactly what the Debts, Assets, and Net Worth is for that month:

The sidebar gives you a tabular form, with some quick red light/green light indicators on net worth movements from month to month:

You can also click the Export button and get the asset/liability/net worth break down by month in spreadsheet format:

While YNAB 3 had a Net Worth report, we believe we’ve made serious improvements to it. The exporting is cleaner, the chart is visually stunning (with subtle gradients), and the filtering is faster and more intuitive.

Enjoy this new report, especially as you see your net worth climb through diligent use of YNAB 4 (and the underlying method of budgeting right).

  1. Jesse and YNAB team,

I am looking forward to upgrade on Tuesday. I had YNAB Pro in the end of 2009 and I upgraded to YNAB3 (great improvement). I am very impressed with the online classes, forum, support, blog….the list is endless. I tried other budget software programs and they do not compare to YNAB. Now we will have YNAB4!!!!!!!

  2. It’s my wife’s birthday next week and I can’t think of a better present! You guys rock!..ok, I’ll get her something in addition to this.

Seriously – just this week, i went to the dark side (I’ll give you a hint: m**t.com) – loaded up bank acounts, pulled info in – then started to look at their budget options – OO <== my eyes – I was like how does this work..haven't opened it back up..I already use dropbox, but the sync functionality will be awesome along with the new reports.

    Cheers,

    Sean

  3. The net work chart is a awesome. I can already visually see issues with my spending. I can also see this helping me to set goals.

  4. Hey Jesse & the gang,

Is there a way to have accounts set in different currencies?

For example, a checking account in USD, and a savings account in Euro, etc. (I live overseas and have accounts in 3 different countries (and consequently different currencies)).

I don’t want to create a new budget for each currency. Thanks!

    • yikes! just installed YNAB4 and it’s most excellent. BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BAR AND LINE GRAPHS FOR SPENDING??? There only appears to be one of those for net worth — in ynab 3 you could see spending by category in either bar/line graph format OR pie chart, but it appears in YNAB 4 there is no bar/line graph option. I don’t like to complain, since it looks so great but… I’m gonna miss that. Can you tell me that I just missed it?

      • You miss it? Hrm, maybe we can bring something like that back. I personally thought the Income v. Expense report did the trick on letting me know how my money was trending per category (though not in a visual way..).

        • Jesse,

The Income vs. Expense report does give the information requested. I agree, however, that a visual representation of spending per category, per month, is very helpful to quickly see trends for a specific category.

Some are more visual than others, I’d love to see this feature come back. The new reports are absolute dynamite, by the way. Awesome additions!

          • I agree, I just downloaded YNAB 4, clicked on reports and nearly fell off of my chair. Where’s the by category over time expense line chart gone? It’s one of the best bits of YNAB!

It should have simply migrated to the bottom of the Income Vs Expense Tab with each month of the chart lining up under the text breadown’s month , that’s it’s natural home and would make that tab superb.

        • THIS! I was googling where it was and this feature was removed!

This is a HUGE benefit to YNAB that I think you guys should keep. Me and my friend who use YNAB (we’re recent college graduates) we like the charts to see where our money is going OVERTIME. It’s a very interesting thing that leads us thoughts which reveal where our time and money is going!

          • Same, here googled why the chart is gone… I need it back for trending!

          • I also agree Jesse – please bring back the category spending line graph. Trends in spending are massively useful and I MISS THEM. You need to bring them back quick!

  5. My Husband and I are super excited for YNAb 4 to come out….we had to call an emergency budget meeting to figure out how to buy it this Tuesday. The automatic syncing will be incredible!! We are so excited to see the new changes. It’s fun using YNAB to track our mortgage payoff and our total net worth. You guys have such an awesome product! I posted about what you do on my blog and why budgeting is so important for a family and marriage. Thanks for all you do!!!

  6. I concur, huge benefit is the visualization of the data points in YNAB and passes the wife test well. Do you have a rough expected date for graphs to come back?

    • We were hoping for this year, but it looks like we won’t make that! We are making solid progress on it though, and hope to have it out as part of a free update pretty soon.

        • Don’t really understand why a feature that existed in a previous version takes so long to incorporate into the current version. Ah well. At least it is coming soon. Thanks for the update Jesse.

          H

          • We rewrote it entirely because our data structure changed entirely from 3 to 4 :) and we redesigned it visually. So pretty much started from scratch.

  7. I like the ideas of this program, but the notion that people who have DEBT have the ability to budget $100 to go to restaurants is a bit ridiculous. You need to TEACH people how to spend their money, TEACH them to walk the road to financial prosperity.
I was going to buy your program until I saw that the $100 in restaurant budget, because I know if I had $100 I would be putting it onto a credit card payment.
We have all made financial mistakes, my objections come from the scars my own “trials by fire” have given me.
Sadly, my budget doesn’t allow me to spend the on a budgeting program =]

I wouldn’t mind working for you guys to be honest. America needs an overhaul like this.

    Sincerely
    -Scott
