they need to approve it asap. my budgeting is becoming a bit of a mess without the iphone app. there are way too many transactions inputted in ynab 4 to go back to ynba 3. Please apple on behalf of all ynab users app have mercy lol
I’ve been txting myself (do some other countries call it SMSing?) each time I spend during the day and recording it in the evening, it’s working for me so far…
this is actually a good idea. I think some banks like chase have the ability to text you for any debit card or credit card transaction but your idea is handy for cash purchases. Thanks for sharing :)
Well folks, I don’t know how long you all have been using YNAB, but it’s been about a year for me. Before YNAB I used Mint.com for two years or so and an Excel spreadsheet & Quicken for about 10 years before that. Being without the iPhone app has inconvenienced me, but my budget is still 100% in tact. After doing this for so long, I don’t need to see numbers to know what I can or can’t afford. It’s kind of like changing your diet. If you do it long enough, your body adjusts to different/less foods and eventually the new diet becomes to new normal. Stick with it folks, don’t find an excuse to relax your commitment to your goals. Just glance at your Budget screen before you leave the house and then you’ll be able to decide what you can and can’t afford that day. Keep all (ALL!) receipts in your purse/wallet and commit to enter them in YNAB before you retire for the day. If it takes more than five minutes you’re probably doing something wrong… Good luck!
Hey thanks for the YNAB4, I am looking forward to the app but it doesn’t mean my budget it outta whack either doing it on the desktop, I’m SUPER glad we have the desktop THANKS!
Looking foward to the APP whenever it decides to come out and play.
Have they given you any reason why the full version has been slow to get in review, or do you think that they are waiting for the lite approval and will quickly approve the full version after that (sense the Dropbox syncing seems to be the main issue).
Don’t YNAB 3 and YNAB 4 use the same data file? I haven’t input any transactions via YNAB 4, however I did open it up when I first downloaded it, and it opened up my standard YNAB data file. I then closed it down and opened up YNAB 3, and it still worked and displayed perfectly. I didn’t check the actual file location to see if it made a duplicate… which perhaps it did. But it seems you should be able to use YNAB 3 to sync existing iphone transactions and then YNAB 4 for new transactions. Or maybe I have the wrong understanding.
They don’t. When you opened YNAB 4, it imported your YNAB 3 data, and migrated that to the new YNAB 4 data set. Your original YNAB 3 legacy file remains unchanged. If you make a change in YNAB 4 and then open YNAB 3 again, you’ll notice that the change doesn’t take.
I really have appreciated your updates about the app approval process. I think most developers probably go through this same maddening process when they try to get their app approved but we just don’t hear the details of submit/rejection/resubmit/rejection….
Normally a new version of an app just appears on our phones and we have no idea how long or stressful a process it was to get it through the gauntlet at Apple!
Please post a detailed timeline somewhere when it’s all finished and both apps are in the store. It will be an interesting read!
Looking forward to this! I have been using YNAB since January and think YNAB4 is fantastic. Can’t wait to be able to use the iPhone app with it! Hopefully it’ll be approved really soon… Thanks for your persistence. :)
I downloaded and submitted a 5 star rating and the below review. Good work!
I will definitely be purchasing YNAB 4 out of Trial and the full version of YNAB for iPhone once released. Thoughts on suggestions for app improvement:
- Give the option to set a timer on when to lock the screen (Like 1Password) for app switching. I was switching back and forth between applications to enter budget items and was prompted every time to enter my PIN; it sucked.
- Search Transactions – On the main budget page at the top it would be nice to have a search screen to search transactions. I thought I miss-categorized a transaction and had to click each budget to look for it
- In Enter A Transaction:
a. Put the decimal point on entering the Amount. It is cool to not have to put the decimal point in but would be a nice option to put it in myself to
b. On the Date screen having it display the day as well (Mon, Tue, etc.)
Why go Full Version? To support YNAB. They have a very well refined app and should be rewarded for their hard work. They also care about you as a person. They do this for you first, money second. They are so passionate about providing the tools and training for people live within their means reward them with a purchase!
I am slow to adopt change. I came across YNAB 2 or 3 years ago when they first went Mac and refused to leave my Quicken habit and didn’t go YNAB. Finally after using three different apps to keep my family budget up to speed at a 2-4 hour per week time suck on Saturday for those 2 to 3 years when I saw YNAB 4 I said enough is enough and dove in. YNAB has proved its weight in gold and will be cutting my time down 70%. Thank you YNAB.
I learned to regain control of my family’s finances under Dave Ramsey’s FPU. If you can’t grasp what Jesse’s team is trying to teach go to Dave Ramsey but use YNAB.
Been playing around with lite for a while; excellent job on it. This is going to help my wife and I stay in sync so much better than before. One little thing though, if you could add an uncategorized category to the app that would be fantastic. Perhaps it is there an I just missed it. But the reason I say that is, because there is no account view in lite, if you accidentally hit save before assigning any category to a transaction you can’t get to it to fix it or delete it. If I am doing something wrong please let me know. Other than that I am very happy! (and even that is a very minor nitpick as it is easy to find and fix on the desktop)
Fingers crossed!
So if my math is correct it’s been in review for almost 9 hours and hasn’t been kicked back out yet.
Fingers crossed here, as well.
Hopefully the full version will have the same reviewer so the review of that app will be fast after the lite app.

Agreed, this lapse in mobile transaction entering has put me into a budget tailspin… Please Apple approve this app!!!!
Ditto

Hope it gets through the Apple system soon!
I need one website where I can get NBA trade rumors and YNAB iPhone updates at the same time.
I am praying right now!
What’s funny is I’m nearly positive I’ve seen a couple of apps get updated TWICE since YNAB submitted the first time.

Let’s hope that’s the case!
Jesse,
Is YNAB4 app for iphone be available in the Cyprus store as well?
Thanks
DP
I believe we make it available worldwide.
Great, look forward to seeing it POSTED!

Ynab lite is in the app store!
After waiting for so long, I thought this was a joke. My first search came up with nothing and then the app popped up. Downloading now! Thanks :)
Woot, woot! I guess checking this blog 40 times a day paid off, lol!
OMG FINALLYYYYYYY!!!
YNAB Lite is live & ready for download in the App Store everyone!! I just downloaded it. :-)
Just downloaded YNAB Lite. So glad it was finally approved! Thanks Jesse and crew.
Downloading as I type . . . yay!!! I’ve only been checking like 20 times a day. =)
And it works!! Just as promised. Thanks, YNAB!! Now the wait for the full version won’t seem quite as long. =)
Finally! Crashes every time on “syncing” after I select my budget. I have a theory as to why… I’ll post back if I figure it out.
Yep, same thing is happening to me. I authorise YNAB through Dropbox, it starts syncing and then crashes.
Lite is available!

Great news!
Can someone post a direct link to the app please? It won’t show up when I search the app store.
Thanks!
direct link
Thanks Jesse!
Just installed the app. I’m already very impressed by how well the syncing performs.
Excellent piece of software. Thank you so much. :)
Thought everyone would like to know that YNAB Lite for the IPhone is now availiable in the app store. Just downloaded it.
