If only you were looking for a part time JS developer… I am in no position to give up my current position but would LOVE to work on YNAB (as YNAB runs my financial life and I LOVE it!) even if it were part time!

I’m testing out YNAB, and I was on the verge of putting in amounts and dates into my categories when this post caught my eye. I feel way more organized now. I have an Excel spreadsheet I made in 2006 that I’ve used to track spending with the categories set up just like this. Great minds think alike! Hoping this will help track my money before it leaves the account!

Sounds like a great opportunity, just wish it was the right time to make the switch. Good luck with the web app. YNAB is the best, and adding a web frontend will make it that much better (especially with us linux people).

I love this article! I get paid weekly (contract) I ended up creating some sort of partial solution to this (originally) by creating a text document listing the big expenses for each week, then working down the priority list until my “ATB” was at zero. Here, you’ve just explained how I can remove that first document step, and just keep that info handy in YNAB until I build my buffer!

Personally, since I’m new at this, I add the dates in just for peace of mind (especially if it’s an autodraft), as a reminder that I need to go back and enter the transaction into YNAB. Some people use the automated transactions feature, however I do not because I like to have more control in knowing that, A) I see it on my bank statement now, and B) NOW I can enter it in YNAB. Hope that makes sense. :)

The first step towards living on last months income must be to live on last paychecks income, i.e. the paycheck received on the 1st of the month should cover the outflows in the second half of the month. I believe this is much more achievable than making a full months buffer but it will provide almost the same sense of security, as you’re now able to budget the whole month on the 1st.

Having said that, I don’t really see why you would need to put the dates in the category names as long as you have your categories in two master categories called “1st paycheck” and “2nd paycheck”. If the bill is due in the second half of the month, you should have money to budget it no matter if it’s due in the first or second part of that paychecks period. :-)

Thank god I’m paid monthly and in advance – it is just so much more YNAB-friendly! ;-)
