Adding multiple amounts as split transaction workaround?

Adding multiple amounts as split transaction workaround?

Postby Ubik » Tue Jul 03, 2012 2:01 pm

While trying to capture items from a receipt, I thought "Hey, why don't I just add the amounts for items from the same budget category together?" This seemed like a good workaround for the still to be implemented split transaction feature on Android. To my surprise, when entering an amount using the on screen keyboard and pressing the "+" button does not seem to do a thing. Whatever values are entered afterwards simple gets added to the already entered value.

eg. according to YNAB for Android, 1.99 + 9.95 = 1999.95 (Yes, I tried this with a number of different keyboards as well - Standard Android, Samsung, TouchPal).

Nevermind split transactions... is something as basic as being able to add multiple entries to get a single total amount for a single transaction not implemented yet? Do I really have to either add this in my head or switch to another android calculator? Surely there should be feature parity between the desktop version and the mobile version for something basic like this.

If this oversight is mine and I'm missing something, some please set me straight and tell me what I'm doing wrong. If this functionality is indeed missing, I'd be very surprised if I'm the only one who needs it.

I'm not sure exactly what you're doing in the split transaction, but I add up items for each category all the time. I enter the total amount of the split in the main line, tab down to enter the first category, and in the amount field I hit, say $5.00 and then the + sign until I've entered all items in that category on the receipt. I do the same for each split.

Does that answer the question?

Thanks for the quick reply - this is indeed what I do with the desktop version. I was referring to the Android version where split transactions have not yet been implemented.

The idea is to add the values for items that belong to the same budget category together as a single entry. It seems that on the Android version I can't add a value, then press "+" to add up a second value.

Sorry, that's right, you can't make calculations in the Android app. :( Can't wait for splits!

Oh well. At least you've confirmed what I suspected, thank you.

I could have lived without split transactions if adding worked. Without it, receipts that contain lots of entries from multiple budget categories are just too much effort to enter on my mobile... Mind you if split transactions made an appearance without the calculations I originally enquired about... it would be extremely disappointing.

Now we wait.

Does anyone know the ETA for being able to do split transactions on Android mobile? Currently I just put everything in one category and make a note in the memo field (I don't use that field on a regular basis) and then fix it when I get home. Its a little bit of double work but if helps me at least keep an accurate balance.

Splits will be coming soon. (Yes, really!)

There are no current plans to add calculator functionality to the Android app.

It would be nice if the Android app could integrate the basic Android calculator for use within ynab when required. Haven't a clue if that's possible or if anything similar is done with other apps currently available

That would be very helpful (if not mandatory) to make the split transactions actually useful.

No plans to add a calculator to a budgeting app? That's like GM saying they have no plans to include wheels with their trucks.

Just bumping thread to say I'm keen to be able to enter in split transactions on the android app. Having a calculator to ensure your splitted amounts add up to the total transaction would help to make sure I've got it right. I tried splitting my one receipt into separate entries on my app, (using my head for the math), but found it confusing when I went to double check my bank accounts aligned with my YNAB entries as it of course wouldn't match up. So I end up putting all in one category and putting a note in the memo field to split it later. Kind of defeats the whole cloud sync purpose, when you have to go back and continually correct things.

Anyway, any news of how far away the split feature is?

It would just be silly and wrong to not release a calculator with split transaction functionality. I will be absolutely disappointed in YNAB if there is no calculator. Let's get it right the first time guys, this is a no-brainer.

I have NEVER EVER used split transactions without the built in calculator in YNAB on my desktop. It is absolutely fundamental, since I go through each item on my receipt and add it up one by one, for each category of items on the receipt.

Has split transactions been implemented yet ?? Will it have the function where it tells us how much is left unaccounted for when we split ?

Apple just released a massive disappointment of a phone and I am seriously considering switching to android....

+1 Agreed!

I was recently up for renewal with my carrier which included reduced monthly costs and an zero upgrade fee to change phones. I too was unimpressed with the iPhone 5 announcement, so I switched from the iPhone 4 to the Galaxy S3. I knew going in that splits weren't available for Android, which where an important feature when it comes to YNAB is one of the few features I needed that iOS could provide which Android could not. Fortunately, I still have an iPad so I now do all my splits on it as a short term solution. However, I would like to see splits for Android in the near future as my next tablet might not be an iOS based device and the ability to input splits on the fly is a very important and extremely helpful feature.
