Why can't I edit existing transactions?

Why can't I edit existing transactions?

Postby neatdesign » Tue Mar 13, 2012 5:45 am

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can only make edits to my transactions on my Android within a few minutes of entering them, but after a certain point -- I don't know how long exactly -- I can't. Instead I'm stuck with whatever I entered initially.

For example, once a charge has posted to my checking account, I cannot change it to "Cleared" nor can I edit the description or correct any typos. My only remedy is to edit the transaction using the YNAB desktop version, then sync the changes with my phone.

What's the point in having the Android version if you can't use YNAB on-the-go the same way you would on your desktop?

If the Android version is the same as iPhone you can edit transactions made on your phone up until your next sync. The app is not a full version of YNAB, but primarily (at this stage) for entering new transactions on the go. If you've synched a transaction and notice there is an error, then yes you have to use the desktop version to correct it.

There have been requests for a fully functional YNAB app, but I don't know if it is on the developers' ToDo list, or for that matter even their "maybesomewheredownthetrack" list.

I use my iPhone app not as a substitute for the desktop, but rather as an abbreviated take-along. I enter transactions on the go, check category balances, and I can check account balances if I need to. That is enough for me, as I find it easier than keeping track of a little notebook. I always have my phone with me.

I sync it every few days, whenever I open YNAB to update it (check my online banking activity and update YNAB accordingly). I prefer the desktop for detailed work because I appreciate a larger screen.

Hmm. That sort of defeats the purpose of having a mobile version, then. I guess I had assumed it would be like Dropbox, where you could update the data anywhere at any time. But if I can only update transactions on the desktop, then I might as well just enter everything on the desktop and sync it, then use my phone as "read-only".

Yeah, like others have said, it's primary purpose is for transaction entry in real time, not full YNAB management. That may change once the updates are released with cloud sync, but I'm not sure how much will be just transaction entry with real time sync as opposed to full management.

That said, seeing the "Gas" category balance when I want to fill up is very helpful. Being able record the gas purchase as it happens is good as well, but I still have to sync when I get home. Entering the gas purchase, automatically updating at home AND my wife's droid immediately so she sees the new updated Gas category balance will be fantastic. I can't wait for cloud sync.

I use my Sony Erricsion's Xperia it comfortable to use and that is enough for me, as I find it easier than keeping track of a little notebook. I always have my phone with me.
