April 2009: I Will Teach You To Be Rich

Join the YNAB Book Club! We'll use this thread to discuss a new personal finance book each month. It's time we broadened our horizons a bit -- not everything's about budgeting. Well, not really anyway. I guess.

I have purchased the book today.

Even though I live in the UK, I enjoy any finance book and I thought it may give me some more ideas.

I did watch some of Ramit Sethi's broadcast today and asked a few times if he had heard of YNAB but I did not manage to get a reply, I don't think I won a prize either for purchasing, but never mind.

To keep my living below my means process going though, I bought the book off Amazon with a voucher I recieved for filling in on-line surveys, so it did not cost me anything!!

Happy days.

Just so everyone's clear, we'll read it in April and discuss as we go along -- no need to wait until the end when everyone's done to discuss!

Bummer, my library doesn't have it. I'd buy off Amazon, but don't feel like paying for shipping. Hmm... I wonder if I have a Borders coupon floating around... :D (Pays to be on their email mailing list!)

Borders lets me ship to the local store for free, but they've stopped sending me general use coupons since I used several of them in a row.

Kindle is Amazon's proprietary technology e-book reader. e-books to read on it cost just a little bit less than a mass market paperback, so you'd have to buy a lot of Kindle e-books instead of paper books to make up the cost of the reader.

Ugh. No thanks. I like my local library too much to pay for a book - unless it's one I realllllly really want. As it is, I'm having a hard time talking myself into buying this month's book to read - even with a 25% off coupon at Borders.

And pksublime - I have nothing else to buy on Amazon, so not worth going that route. No point in spending money just to get free shipping. :)

I also had a hard time talking myself into buying the book, but I did. I used the $13.00 remaining in my Amazon account from a previous gift certificate to make the purchase. I hope it will be good and worth the time and money.

I'm already a little turned off by the title "I Will Teach You To Be Rich". Realistically, very few of us will ever be financially rich. I'm hoping to have good health and live a reasonably comfortable life. So the title is a little too profound for my tastes. I would have been more interested in the title "I Will Teach You To Manage Your Money". But I'll give it a go and hope to learn something from the author.

I had a read of a few sections of the book from a link from a link from a link of one of the ones somewhere in one of these threads

I wouldn't mind getting it, but doubt if it would ship to me in time if I go the paper book route, and anyway shipping will treble the cost of the book (if I'm lucky, sometimes it's more). I'm trying to figure out if the Kindle version will work in the eBook reader I have (Sony PRS-505) so if any technically minded people can help me with that it would be appreciated.

Nope. Kindle is a proprietary format, and Kindle e-books only work on Kindle.

Well, funny. Just got an email from Borders - 40% off any one book today through Saturday. Guess that's a sign? :)

I have an Amazon Prime membership so I get 2-day free shipping. I guess it's probably in their agreement somewhere that I can't just buy the books for everyone and have it reimbursed...would be tedious that's for sure!
