Emergency categories in budgeting

Postby KJJorgen » Tue Mar 16, 2010 6:41 am

Probably a stupid question with an easy answer, but.....

Say I have budgeted an emergency category, over 6 months, and that fund now has $5000. The emergency happens, and I need to reallocate this to money available this month, say $4000 of it. How do I do that? I am not really moving money between accounts, but the budget does not care where the money is located. I need, in the budget, to reallocate money from the emergency category, to somewhere. I am not quite sure how to do this.

Budget a negative amount to the emergency category, this will make the money available to budget. Then re-allocate the money where you need.

Whether there's an existing entry this month or not, just click this months cell on the budget for the emergency category and type -4000. The click will highlight the existing amount (whether zero or some other number). The minus sign will bring up the calculator. Then when you type 4000 it will subtract it from whatever is there. If it was $0 this month, it will show as -$4000. If $1000 was budgeted previously this month, then it will show -$3000. Etc.

Whatever was coming out of the Emergency Fund, I would just enter the transaction in the register and catagorize it as an outflow from the Emergency Fund. But thats just what I would do. :)

Thank you Malisa,

Using negative numbers makes this elegant and accurate, and I can still keep track of where the money went.
