YNAB 3 - Transferring money between categories

Postby outdoors-junkie » Sun Feb 26, 2012 3:00 pm

Hi there

Been on YNAB 9 months now and been saving for rainy day fund for car insurance. Managed to get a good deal and pay about £100 less than I put in the budget. Now I want to treat myself with some of that money so can anybody tell me how to move it from one category to another.
I'm hoping I don't have to go back over the last 9 months and re-adjust the payments so that less is put to the car insurance category and I find that £100 in my buffer. :?
Cheers in advance for any help that can be offered.

Just budget a 'negative' amount to the category this month for the amount you want to take out. Click in the box, and type -100. Ignore anything you already budgeted this month, as the calculator will pop up and do the math for you. If you had budgeted $60, your box should now show -40 for example. The total category balance will reduce by the 100 that you have deducted, so if it was previously $900 it will now show 800.

Once you have done that, go to the category you want to increase, and type +100 there.

If you want to remember why you did this later on, then you can use the note feature in the budget amount box (roll your mouse over the left of the box and a little 'note paper' icon will appear. Click that and you can add a note in the pop-up box that appears) to leave yourself a note so that you can remind yourself why you did what you did.
