Setting up YNAB3 for Cloud

Postby gregory6325 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 10:11 pm

I recently updated to the latest version of YNAB 3 on my iPhone. Now it's asking me if I would like to set it up to work in the Cloud. I sure would! So, to the question, "How would you like to sync?", I press the big old green button that says, "Cloud sync". Then it returns this:

Woops
We could not find YNAB on your Dropbox, please set up YNAB for Dropbox using the desktop application

Okay--so I go to the desktop application, and I find nothing specific about how to set up YNAB with Dropbox. So, I figure, I'm a pretty smart guy, so I go ahead and do a "Save as..." on my budget file and save it to my Dropbox on my Mac. Then I go back to the iPhone app and press that big green button again, and yikes--same error.

So--what gives? What am I doing wrong?

You need to be using YNAB 4 for the desktop to use cloud sync with your iPhone.
If you only have YNAB 3, you can upgrade to YNAB 4, but it is a paid upgrade unless you purchased YNAB 3 after the 26th of December last year.
You can check if you're eligible for the free upgrade or a discount here: http://www.youneedabudget.com/upgrade

Seriously?! I have to pay $40 just to use cloud sync? That seems a little extreme. Does the software work better? That was the one thing I liked about you guys, is that once you bought into the system, you were in. Guess not anymore.

It's not just cloud sync. There's several things about YNAB 4 that are much better. Give the trial a run, and see if you think its worth the $40. It certainly was for me, and many others.

1. CLEARED BALANCE match ACTUAL BALANCE
2. NEVER OVERBUDGET: Available to Budget = 0
3. Adjust for OVERSPENDING immediately!
4. MAKE DECISIONS BASED ON CATEGORY BALANCES!

Hi guitarj,
You can check out a list of changes here: http://www.youneedabudget.com/features/whats-new
There's been more changes since that page was made. There's more still coming.

We've always been up-front that any updates to the same major version (YNAB 3.1 -> YNAB 3.5 -> YNAB 3.6) are free (and we include a LOT in the free updates), but going to a new major version (YNAB Pro, YNAB 3, YNAB 4) is paid. We think it's fair - there's a LOT of new stuff in there, and if no-one pays, we can't afford to keep developing it. We also won't force anyone to upgrade, if you are happy with 3, then you are more than welcome to keep using it. If you'd like to give 4 a try, you can do that for 34 days, and go back to 3 if you aren't happy with it.

Cheers,

Just a small warning you can't convert a YNAB 4 budget folder back to a YNAB 3 file, so if you think there's a chance you won't upgrade then you should run 3 and 4 in parallel. Personally once I tried YNAB 4 and experienced the convenience and ease of use of cloud sync, and the other new features like reconciliation wizard, there was no way I was going back to 3.
