Share selected budget?

Postby alexkatie » Sun Aug 05, 2012 5:44 am

Hi,

Is it possible to share one one budget file with dropbox and not the whole YNAB folder. I am trying to get my sister budgeting so have set up a budget file for her and want her to install YNAB on her iphone so she can track where she is up to and enter transitions. But i dont want her to be able to see my files  .

thanks

Create a separate folder to house just her budget and share that with her dropbox account.

I'm pretty sure you're going to want to name that folder something that beings with YNAB, though.

How else is it going to find it unless you modify the root file on the sister's Dropbox?

If she has ynab installed, she can just search for the folder and it will open.

The yroot file will create itself and it not existing is only a problem if you are trying to access your budget from your mobile phone witha dropbox without a yroot file. The first time you open that file on the desktop it creates everything required for you.

I guess I'm reading the issue differently than you are. It doesn't sound like there is a desktop install using the sister's Dropbox so there will be no root file in her Dropbox, only the folder shared by the brother.

Perhaps. I assumed she had a computer that she would be accessing her budget file with and wanted to share it with her brother.

The only time a yroot file needs to be manually put in a dropbox folder is if that dropbox account is not used with the desktop app. As soon as you fire up the desktop app it will create the necessary yroot file. That can be very confusing and I dont think it is the case so i was not directly addressing it.But you are absolutely right... If you will not have that dropbox on a desktop and access the desktop software, you would need to copy the yroot folder into your dropbox.

Hi,

DeguelloTex is correct, the file is stored on my computer and as my sister does not have a computer i want to know how to get her step up to track. We will then be reviewing on my computer to see if any budget changes are needed. I want to have her to be able to enter transactions and check her balance on her iphone.

So i need to 1) copy the yroot file into her dropbox
2) save the folder with a YNAB name?
3) let the file live within the folder.

Thanks for the help.

PS i'm female too

My impression based on the release notes of the 2.02 mobile version is that all you need to do is share with her a Dropbox folder that starts with "YNAB".

From the 2.02 Release Notes:
It is now much easier to share a budget with another Dropbox account. Just share your "YNAB" folder with the other Dropbox account, and when you log in with that Dropbox account on another iPhone, the iPhone will be able to find all budgets inside of the "YNAB" folder, (or any folder that starts with "YNAB").

Sorry about the brother thing, I should have known better.
