Screenshot: how to you blur data?

Postby litterbug » Wed Jul 04, 2012 7:59 pm

I've seen some screenshots where the author has blurred or blocked out account names or dollar amounts for privacy's sake. How is this done? These days I take screenshots with the Mac's Grab utility, which allows me to just choose an area of the screen to copy, and it would be nice to post that without publicizing my bad habits (e.g. number of lattes last week).

I use a little program called Screenshot Captor. It's has lots of little tools for things like like adding dialogs, arrows and using selection boxes to blur sensitive data. Totally simple to use.

There's a veritable array of software available that all do similar things. I use Screenshot Captor as it was free and didn't have to come out of my 'software/hardware' budget category.

And here is an example. It's a snapshot of me and my wife relaxing on the beach. She's the one on the right as you look at the photo. See how I have blurred out her face to protect her privacy? She's quite famous in the aquatic community and privacy is important. (click to enlarge) Please excuse my love handles....I've put on a little weight recently....

I have two suggestions for you. One I know you already have because you have a Mac. The other is free and you may have because you've been hanging around YNAB for a while. Neither will blur (I don't think) but both can place a black line or box over things.

The way you can do it with a Mac native thing is to do the screen shot with the screen grab and then open it in Preview and use the annotation tools and choose. Tools>Annotate>Add a rectangle, make it black and be sure it covers what you want.

The other way is with Jing. You can get it free at techsmith.com. That's what we use to make screencasts, but it also takes still screenshots and you can use the highlighting tool there.

Thanks for the Mac advice, Malisa. I never use this stuff, so I forget it's even three!

And something I've just found, another free app, Skitch. I'm an Evernote fan and it's an Evernote product/acquisition. I haven't played with the Mac version yet (just downloaded it) but it's an easy way to do annotated screenshots on the ipad (something I've never had another way to do easily). I don't like that it has to use it's own browser (on the ipad) but it's still pretty versatile, it would appear.

I played with Evernote for a few weeks and although it had some nice features I didn't exactly love it, so I'm not sure I want to pay to get more data and just not use it--and then forget to cancel it for six months, as I so often do.

There's also another app for the Mac from techsmith called Snagit. Really, really nice program but costs a few $$$ though. Depends what you are going to do with it I guess, whether it's worth spending money from your budget or not. You can use it on trial to evaluate it's worth though.

Meh, Grab for screenshots (now that I know how to mark up the shot) and Jing for video are enough for now. The more new software I get, the more I play with them--and don't do things in real life!
