Suggestion about requiring real names instead of handles

Postby cspeter8 » Wed Dec 20, 2006 5:11 am

Hi -

I think it would be better if folks used their real first and last name for their accounts instead of just any name. I find it more comfortable to reply to specific posts when I use their name, instead of a made-up handle that represents what they are calling themselves. Any thoughts on that?

(having said that, I just realized I use cryptic 'cspeter8'! But I do like to add my full, real name after every post, for exactly this reason ..)

From my perspective, the anonymity provided by using an online handle affords a certain freedom when discussing finances that would otherwise be lacking.

In addition, there are many people in real life that know me by no other name than "Shark". They have no idea what even my given first name is. So at least in my case, it is a name that I do go by in real life.

Coming from someone who was "stalked" online in the late '90's, I know I will never use my real name online. It took years to be rid of the fear of the experience, but what remains is a respect for the fact that there are seriously disturbed people out there who need very little personal info to ruin anothers life.

Okay, some very good considerations here. I withdraw my suggestion :)

As a victim of identity theft, I am more than happy to have some anonynomy online.

Thank you.
