YNAB Forum (phpBB) navigation

Postby xraymd » Sat Jan 02, 2010 10:30 pm

Greetings, I am woefully behind and am trying to catch up on numerous boards in the Forum by reading topics from oldest to newest. So far I have not found any option to go to directly to the next newest topic on the board I am reading when I have finished reading the posts of the current topic. If I try to go back a level, it puts me to the very top of the current board. For a board with hundreds of topics, it is taking a lot of extra steps to find the page I was on and manually click the next newest topic to read - lather, rinse, repeat!

Is this a limitation of phpBB bulletin board construction or is there a user setting or some other way I have overlooked to accomplish my objective?

I think it's a limit of board construction. What I've been doing to work around it is: Use Firefox. Open the board (or "recent posts") in a tab. CTRL-click a few posts to open in new tabs. Read and perhaps respond in the tabs. Close each tab as I'm done with that post. Go back to the tab I started from and CTRL-click a few more posts to open in new tabs. Refresh or navigate in that tab as needed based on how I'm working through the posts. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Thanks, Patzer, I hardly ever use Firefox so was unaware of this mechanism. Does CTRL-clicking into numerous tabs also cause the forum to re-color the topics as "read already" as does the flat way of brute force returning to each topic to read it as I have had to do in IE? (I am trying to be sure it will keep track of where I have already been).

It does not automatically re-color the topics on the tab I work from; I need to refresh that tab to accomplish that. But it does leave a fairly subtle dotted line box around the last topic I clicked, until I click somewhere else on that tab. That's good enough for me to get through a page of topics 7 to 12 at a time. Refreshing (F5) does leave me on the same page of a multi-page forum, and it leaves the page scrolled to the same place.

In theory, the CTRL-click trick to open in a new tab could work with any tabbed browser. I just work more in Firefox than in Chrome, and I only use IE for pages that stupidly work wrong with both Firefox and Chrome.

Ctrl-clicking works fine with IE for opening the pages in new tabs. Using the "View unread posts" page also means that once you've read a bunch of topics, you can refresh the page, and those topics you read will automagically go away.
