Atlas Shrugged

Atlas Shrugged

Postby amedley » Sat Dec 25, 2010 10:54 am

This is not really a book about finance per say. It is more a novel on living. I have read it several times, getting something new out of it each time. There are times in which I just have to re-read it. Usually when I am in a funk. The reason I am suggesting this book here is, finance books do not really teach us much except about budgeting. Atlas Shrugged teaches about living for yourself. It teaches the "why's". It also helps me focus on what I need to do to further my life. After the latest reading of this book, which i finished again in early Dec., I signed up for school again. Not to make more money, I already have a well paying job. It is just not as fulfilling as it used to be. I hope this book can be a help to any of you. Adam

I agree, Adam. I read AS again for about the tenth time last fall as part of an on-line book club, and it was fascinating to hear new insights into Rand's thinking that I had never considered. I first read it in 1957 when I was 14, and it has influenced me all my life. Note my sig and avatar.
I think the moderator of the book club is looking to publish a compendium of the discussion at some point.
Did you know Alan Greenspan was a member of Rand's circle of NY friends, known as "The Collective"?
Mr. Thompson...you're time is up.

I haven't read this but one of my sons has and he's suggested it to me. I think I'll see if the library has it. I love to read and since the library is free, it will fit into my budget. ;)

I'm happy to see one of my all time favorite books here. I haven't read it for a couple of years, and I just put it on my Kindle. Time for another read, especially since the movie is due out April 15 of this year.

I highly recommend reading Francisco's money speech.

I must admit that I never read the book but listened to it in the car.

I drive 90 miles one way to work and I try to do something other than listen to the morning radio divel. With three hours a day in the car I have chosen to educate myself instead of "uneducating" myself.

As for Atlas I think I will press the play button again.

Atlas Shrugged is one of my all-time favourite books. I just love the strong characters and its such a simple read. I reread it every few years.

SPOILER ALERT
The only bit I don't like it John Galt's radio speech. It goes on for FAR too long. Maybe that's something I will appreciate more as I get older. When it was written politicians were still making long speeches, now it more about the sound bite. Maybe I should reread it with that in mind?

Not too keen on Dagny Taggart's promiscuity but that more to do with Ayn Rand's beliefs on sexuality than what I think was truly necessary for the story.
SPOILER ALERT OFF

I have read many of Ayn Rand's other fictional works too but Atlas Shrugged remains a favourite.

Atlas Shrugged is amazing! I listened to the unabridged audio version from audible.com a couple of years ago and loved every minute of it. All 60+ hours worth. :)

The setting is in a fictional America set in a time when railways ruled but it is timeless in its message. I highly recommend it, you won't regret the time spent and will want to go back for more!

If you don't want to read, you can see the movie.

How very refreshing to see others reading this book. Most people in my personal life fail to read anything at all, and something as profound as Atlas is so far out of their league it may as well not even exist. Being an Objectivist, I often get cold remarks on my political views, so many of them just accept that their life is not their own and our only common ground is in specific interests, like music or games.

Given that, you can understand my glee at seeing so many positive remarks on this novel. Thank you all for making my day a bit brighter.

It's a great book for people who want to take responsibility for their own lives. Which is likely a common thread @ YNAB.

But I'm frustrated by how many people simply refuse to give it any consideration.

Having read it twice reading these posts makes me also want to go back for a third time. I enjoyed The Fountainhead almost as much.

Finished reading it a second time. It's a different book - many nuances found this time and I missed. Very enjoyable!

My favorite book of all time, no doubt about it.

My father (a great fan of the book) handed it to me at age 11 and told me to read it. I tried but I only managed to get through the first couple of chapters before giving up -- too nuanced for me at that age, I guess. I put it away in a box and found it again when I moved out of my parent's house at 18 into my own place. I started to read it and...

Wow. I was simply blown away.

Even now in my 40s I still find new meanings within its pages and new things to ponder every time I read it.

No denying it is a great book.
