A grocery budget's budget :)

Everything Personal Finance that isn't specifically about the YNAB Methodology or software, and doesn't have its own dedicated forum to the topic.

I'm actually surprised people put so much under 'groceries'. If I can't eat it it's not a grocery. Cleaning supplies, pet food and most other household needs go under 'Household'. Shampoo, deoderant, etc. go under 'Personal Care'. Adult beverages, eating out, gas station snacks, pop, and coffee all go under various subcatagories of 'Entertainment'.

I do not break my grocery budget down. I used to before YNAB but now I think I have a better handle on everything. Groceries is not the problem. I do like the idea of a grocery 'investing' or stockpiling catagory though.

Time is money and the minimal price savings from grocery and drug stores are far out weighed by the one stop at Wallyworld. I don't get subscribing to a menu website either but maybe it's the same thing; saves time which is worth more than five bucks for you........

Great thread!
Success is not a matter of chance;
it is a matter of choice.
It is not a thing to be waited for;
it is a thing to be achieved.

I'm new here. Interesting to see how others budget groceries.

I do:
Groceries (anything I can eat purchased for at-home use)
Sundries (anything I can't eat purchased for at-home use)
Eating Out (restaurants, fast food)
Work Lunches (trying to get this number down)
Coffee (hub works for starbucks, we eat breakfast together on weekends and I get a $1.50 coffee in the morning)

I've managed to get a lot of the sundries costs down by purchasing reusable items and "going green". One roll of paper towels now lasts over a month. If it's disposable, I try to avoid it. Didn't realize that would have such an effect on my wallet :)

Aloha - when we first started YNAB, we made tons of categories for everything - but over the long run we discovered that it was too much of a chore to micromanage, so we merged categories.

Now work lunches come out of my monthly allowance (same w/ starbucks) so it behooves me to not bring in lunch as then I can use the money saved for something else :wink:

We still have monthly grocery and eating out categories - but those are joint.

Our thinking is if doing the budget becomes a chore - then it won't be maintained.

You ogtta hit the sweet spot that works for you :P

Categories change. I have a coffee category to see what I spend on coffee for now. I could just as easily put it in a memo field and sort it out later on, but I'm also trying to keep track of this versus bringing a thermos.

And then there's the common combination of restaurants and entertainment because rarely is eating out a chore.

Here's the link telling about the butter.

At least it says it's from NZ....

"Pure Creamery" are words we often see on our butter, but the brand, Red Feather, I have never heard of. It does say Australian/New Zealand, so it could well be from across the ditch rather than here (ie, Australian).

I think budgeting our budget is awesome since it will help us reach our financial goals. So I think its great and all we need is a plan and determination and everything will follow.
