Need advice asking for a raise from an employer

Postby newleaf » Mon Sep 06, 2010 1:33 am

Hi all - anyone care to share advice on how to ask for a raise in a performance review? Here's my situation:

My boss's standard approach for 2 years now has been everyone on the team is getting a "cost of living" raise and anyone who's ever had a job knows that that's not really a raise...grrr:!:

Even though I have busted my hump especially hard this year and have the sales figures & quotas to prove it...I have very good reason to suspect that that I'm the least paid person on my team. At times this thought has infuriated me when I think of how much more I've done in my role over the past few years but, anyway, I'm trying to channel this energy into persuading/negotiating a better than "cost of living" raise. Should I mention this hunch that I'm the least paid in negotiations?

I want to keep the job so I'm definitely not ready to make ultimatums like quitting if they don't pay me better, etc.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

One (or both?) of the PF blogs I read has had an article on this. Check out thesimpledollar.com or getrichslowly.org and search there. Other good stuff too.

I am in no position to offer advise on this as on more than one occasion, I've heard that after I left a company (partially surrounding money issues) I heard that they said they should have doubled my salary because they needed to hire two people to replace me. I was young and overconfident and there was no recession, so I left several jobs when they didn't see how wonderful I was. Now, I teach, so I get paid what it says in the little box on the salary schedule. It suits my personality much better.

malisab - thanks for the reply and the links...I'll look at those today. I didn't see the other posts you mentioned. I'll search again.

I enjoy my job but I'm starting to feel that leaving is my only option to gain more income and find growth opportunity. To your other points, I am thankful (that especially with the seemingly uncertain job growth in the US) that I have and have had a job and don't want to seem ungrateful. However, it's not much of an incentive to really apply extra effort/enthusiasm to a job when the status quo is equally awarded.

P.S. I guess I should've also stated that I've been a lurker at these forums for a long time but this is my first post. I'm still using an older YNAB version.

Thanks again,

Welcome newleaf, glad to see you posting :)

I know there is very good information including a video example of how to present yourself at a job/raise interview and things to do/not to do at getrichslowly. Pretty sure they are done by Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You to be Rich, so if you can't find it at GRS search for him and go from there.

Schedule a meeting with your bosses to talk about compensation. In the meeting, tell them how much you like working for the company. Share with them your successes this year and what it has done for the company. Be systematic and thorough.
Say that you wanted to bring this to their attention because you are hoping it is possible to get a salary increase beyond the cost of living increase and this is a natural time to talk about it .

After you've made that statement, be silent and wait for someone to talk. Even if it gets uncomfortable.

___
That would be my general strategy. I definitely would advise seeking out other advice beyond this though.

Thanks Rose! I found the video. I had not heard of Ramit or his book...will look into this further :)

Solid advice bookman...I missed my opportunity to schedule a meeting like this before budgeting was complete, but, I'm remaining positive.

There is a Current Affairs radio show on Triple J in Australia called Hack. It is really good quality journalism. Anyhow, on Thursday they had a segment on negotiating a pay increase so you might want to check it out.

You want the MP3 for Thursday 23 September: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/hack/podcast/

The relevant parts start from 17:56.
