Book club?

Postby pksublime » Fri Aug 17, 2007 1:30 pm

With so many good books out there on personal finance and similar topics, does anyone want to participate in a semi-formal book club?

I'm thinking about trying to only use books that are available from the local library so that people on tight budgets can still participate. We could include a monthly poll to choose our next book.

What do you all think?

I love reading other peoples POV on finance, in fact I am going to finish my degree in finance and want to be a Financial Planner. I would like to write a book someday, but it'll be good to see what ideas are floating around out there so I can combine them in a new and different way. Then I would be a billionaire ......... muahhaawahha ........

Ooops sorry got carried away there, but all of that is true except for the billionaire part :) :) :) So count me in if you do it!!

I'd be on board for this, have actually suggested it myself...although I never did a poll or anything. I think it would be a lot of fun and educational.

Here's my suggestion just to get the ball rolling. It's been mentioned in other posts but is worth the "bump".

"The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America's Wealthy" by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko.

It's a great look at what it takes to get ahead and gain wealth regardless of how little or how much you may have.

I think to do this right this is what we would need:

1. Its own Forum area named "Book Club" and then each book would have it's own thread (with the book title as the name) where people could discuss the current (and past) book.

2. Some way to indicate what the current book was so that anyone just joining could grab it and read along.

3. Plan the books at least 1 month (or whatever the suggested book club "read time") ahead for anyone who wants to take it out of the library (in case it's not immediately available).

4. A suggestion thread - maybe as a sticky - so people can recommend books for the club.

Otherwise the threads will just be scattered all over the place. And a lot of us have discussed books we've read in other places around the forum in the midst of other topics. It would be nice to have all book discussions in one place where someone looking for recommendations could go and read what others have had to say about them and chime in with their own thoughts as they read.

Thoughts on this? Any chance we could make this happen, Jesse?

This is a great idea. Especially since i am currently reading "The millionaire next door" at the moment.

Would this just cover books on personal finance or other finance area's as well. eg. Investing?

One of my main cost area's is books. I can't help myself. I love reading and i prefer to buy. Atleast YNAB is helping me keep it under control. :P

I have a room downstairs that I call the library. It has one wall completely in bookshelves. It would have more, but that is where the spare beds are so that we can have guests from time to time

I hope that one day i have a house with enough rooms so that i can have a library. (Ofcourse i would need to be able to easily afford the said house so i'm not living above my means)

Ever since I was a little girl, I've dreamed of having a house with a library -- wall-to-wall floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a ladder and a comfy chair. The ladder is Key! :)

I'm a student, so finding time to keep up with a book club might be challenging. But, I'd try!

Okay, to start this thing out let's get a sampling of books to pick from. Post up your favorites and/or a book you'd like to read.

Ok so this is a little slow to get started, would be better if we had our own little section in the forums for it.

Currently i am reading 2 books, one after a recommendation from here. I will write my own little personal thoughts on both as well.

Millionaire Next Door - Thomas Stanley / William Danko
Currently i think its a bit of a dry read, there are some interesting insights for me though and it is keeping me reading. Things that are common sense that i never really thought about before i read it now and again as well as other books.

Richest Man In Babylon - George S. Clason
Currently also reading this, it's only a small book but i love it. The stuff in it makes sense and is easy to follow. I am going to recommend this book to everyone who is even remotely interested in creating wealth and getting on track financially. So far i love it and the overlapping little stories all reinforce each other.

Maybe if others could also put related books and some personal thoughts with it we could get this going.

Regards,
Quilb

I just finished reading Richest Man In Babylon by George S. Clason and i want to know if anyone knows of any other books along similar lines?

Made a lot of sense and was entertaining to read. Actually one of the first finance books i have ever read that i was not able to put down :)

There are so many finance books wether personal finance or other finance related stuff that it is sometimes hard to see the roses among the piles of horse crap.

If anyone knows of any others it would be greatly appreciated if you could please post?

Thanks & Regards,
Quilb
