Personal expenses/perks run through business

We can use this forum to discuss implementing YNAB for your small business. We're not talking about new software here, just a new way of looking at an old problem (your business' books!).

Personal expenses/perks run through business

Postby sbynabber » Sun Jun 24, 2012 2:14 pm

I am using YNAB for our family budget only. I am not interested using YNAB for my business - we already have accounting and budgeting software for the business and YNAB is not suited for my business.

I have a unique situation in that we are able to expense many of our personal items to the business including entertainment, meals, babysitter, auto expenses, health premiums, prescriptions, etc. We would still like to track these "personal" expenses on our YNAB budget, but since the money is coming out of a business pot of money which is not being tracked on YNAB - how best handle this?

If it were me, I'd enter it in the register as a split transaction with a total of zero. For example, if you get a $ 100 meal from your business, enter a split transaction with $ 100 inflow as Income available this month and $ 100 outflow in the Restaurants or whateveryoucallit category.

If your business account always pays for certain categories, then I would likely not track those categories.

However, if you want to track those categories... I would do it like olafmoriarty suggested.

1. CLEARED BALANCE match ACTUAL BALANCE
2. NEVER OVERBUDGET: Available to Budget = 0
3. Adjust for OVERSPENDING immediately!
4. MAKE DECISIONS BASED ON CATEGORY BALANCES!
