iPhone App and Vacation - Huge Help!!!

Postby macduncan » Fri Jun 25, 2010 11:28 pm

Hi all....I took the family this week to see the new Harry Potter attraction in Orlando (really cool stuff). I left my Macbook at home this time and just took my iPhone. I came home with 45 transactions to import and it worked phenomenally! It gave me such a sense of control (my wife just hands me the receipts and laughs at me!) and it was so easy to enter when I came home. Within 15 minutes I was all caught up from being away for 5 days across all my accounts. I can't imagine coming back to have to enter all of those myself!

YNAB is the frickin best, and taking it along on my iPhone was more than I could ask for (well frozen Butterbeer was a close second on vacation). Thanks to the YNAB crew!!!!!

That is so awesome! I also took YNAB with me on our vacation, but I was not so vigilant about using it. We're going to Florida next month and I'm not taking my computer, so I'm determined to make it easier on myself!

And I just read through your goals. How awesome are you?!? :)

I'll have a chance to use my iPhone App in September when I take a 10-day trip to Alaska.

By the way, what, may I ask, is "frozen butterbeer?"

Thanks Joyce! I feel so fortunate to have found both YNAB and Dave Ramsey! YNAB has made all the difference and really brought home the value of a zero based budget!

Take care!

It's very nice being able to take this app on the road during vacation.

But I noticed that there's a problem with this approach as well. Everything under vacation is under one category: vacation. So where would you use a different category when you are on vacation? Am I doing something wrong?

Because we often take similar short trips, but I used to have no idea how much we actually spent and I wanted to know how the money we did spend broke down, I saved my money in one travel category but then transferred it into separate accommodations, transportation, food, and a few other categories. That way, I could decide that if we changed our habits (stayed at a cheaper hotel, spent less on food, etc.) we could spend less in another similar trip.

Now that I've done that a few times, I probably wouldn't need to, but it was helpful while I was learning where our money went. So it has been helpful for me.
