The right direction.... *gnarf*

Postby Hans.Wurst » Tue Dec 13, 2011 8:39 pm

I'm glad to be finally able to tell this success story.
Since September, I was able to decrease my CC-Debts from 4000€ to 3000€ at the beginning of December. I also built a mini EF of 500€ and a three-month buffer for the rental (in case the appartement i'm waiting for becomes available and I have to run through the whole three months of rental-termination of my current appartement). In Addition, my income is always assigned to next month.. although I have to confess that there wasn't any other way, as I get paid the last working-day of each month. And there's still enough left for a comfortable living, I did not cut any expenses yet, I just stopped to blew my money into the wind.

As I'm reading this, I have to reconsider my initial opinion of the step-size i made... I'm a student, working my ~20h (variable income) per week beside classes, paying the study-fees (which will be dropped next semester, Yay! (I'm thankful to live over here and not having to pay those incredible moon-prices like in the U.S.!)). Huge steps, for me at least.

And guess what? YNAB made it all possible! I felt the financial desaster sitting and waiting just out of sight for years. It all startet with my first credit card (they're not that common over here). I lost my overview, all new, and so on... startet to build good looking charts evey six months or so but they were ineffective. Retroperspective and too obvious to pin them to the wall (didn't want every visitorn to see my entire financial situation  ).

You gave me the money-awareness I needed so hard (the only thing my parents were not able to teach me). The only sad thing is that I didn't know YNAB earlier. I could smack my head against the wall when I remember the beginning of this year when I let 4000€ just slip through my hands, bit for bit.

I want to end with positive thoughts. I'm starting to optimize my spending in january (buying only the food needed, buying noname products, decreasing the number of visits in restaurants). My goal is to decrease the CC debt to an amount of 1000€ until the beginning of May. When the liquidation of my investment is due, the investet amount will hit that last hurdle into space... All additional return is going to enable me and the gf a week of vacations... the location depends on the amount.

Thanks YNAB.

Definitely a great success. And as much as you wish you would have found it earlier...just think of how far you are ahead of us who didn't find it until our 40's or beyond. Great job. Keep us updated!

Sounds like you're off to a great start and have a plan in place. It's understandable that you wish you'd found YNAB sooner but since I didn't find it until I was 60 I'm envious. :D
The truth will set you free. But not until it's finished with you.

I beat ya', Don, I found YNAB as a mere pup of 52. Hans, you have a great story--keep writing it! I do my best to have no regrets, but oh my goodness, the idea of starting YNAB while I was still in school...or when I returned to school...or even when I went back for grad school!

An update and reduced happiness:

I mixed up the dates concerning the investment. For liquidation in May '12, I should've cancelled it until May '11.
In addition, I didn't think of the insurance-policies, which became necessary for me this year (as long as I wasn't 25, my parents insurances covered me).

That messed me up, in some kind. But it didn't break my neck, as it would've done, hadn't I've been using YNAB (*Phew*, that sentence was tricky! Please correct me!). I rolled with this punch! Decreased debtreduction for this month, but still reduction. Thanks YNAB!

Great job, Hanz! We all have surprises, but rolling with the punches makes them bearable.

Hans, I admire your progress, your roll-with-it attitude, and your determination to see the positive.

I'll give it a shot to sort your sentence out a bit for you, as I think you are looking to improve your English a little as well. :)

There you go - hardly anything to fix :D

Thanks to WairereRose for the analysis. :D

The last two days, I lost a few small battles against old spending habits: My girlfriends graduation in mind, I checked the fitting of my suits; and guess what, they didn't fit at all. Too wide at the stomach/belly and too narrow around my shoulders.
->Off-Budget-Shopping time! A neat sport jacket 69€, new socks 6€. And since I was in mood, I ate out with my neighbor, 22€. Arrgh!

It was my first relapse... and it gave me some headdache about this months budget.
At least, I had to deal with it. During Pre-YNAB times, it would have been more an fire-and-forget action. Money awareness is the biggest aspect I draw from YNAB! Thanks again :)
