For your friend with the distractibility, he probably needs a tactic lets him see where he stands budgetwise when he is out shopping. I would suggest the almighty cash envelope system for the things he normally would overspend on. He stocks several envelopes with the predetermined cash amount from his YNAB budget on the first of the month and if there is cash in them, he can spend and be within budget. If there isn't cash in them, or not enough for the purchase, he doesn't buy.

Entering in receipts after the fact is not as powerful as carrying the envelope around. And yes, he should try using an actual white paper envelope with cash in it. That way it's different enough from a wallet or credit card that it gets associated with a different kind of spending behavior.

He doesn't even need to track the individual purchases. I would suggest making one YNAB entry for each one in the software: for example, $300 monthly food envelope or $120 entertainment envelope.

If he feels the need to sub-track the envelope expenses, he can stuff the receipts in the envelope as he spends, or he can write the expense and category on the outside of the envelope.

Borrow the wheels from a friend's car (compatible model)bolt them onto yours, and go for the inspection.

Now come home and switch the wheels off.
