Syncing over ad-hoc networks

Postby HappyDave » Thu May 20, 2010 2:40 am

Hi,

Loving the app, I've already felt the value of it in recording a couple of transactions away from my computer. Top stuff.

I'm hitting one issue though. At home I have a Macbook and I'm able to sync seamlessly over my house wifi network. At work, I have a Windows XP laptop. We don't have a wifi network at work, so I attempted to use the Sync over an ad-hoc network instructions. I managed to connect my iPhone to the network, but it immediately dropped to 'Low' (weird since I'm sitting right by it) and when I tried to sync it said it could not find the iPhone, even though the sync page has an ip address and passcode.

I'm a bit flummoxed honestly.

Hi,

maybe a firewall is guarding the ad-hoc communication? A personal firewall, or the windows built-in firewall perhaps? If so, please make sure that port 5250 is not blocked, that's what we use for the sync.

Well, I've added an exception in Windows Firewall, no dice. I'm inside a corporate firewall, but as this is an ad-hoc connection that shouldn't make a difference, right?

That's right.

But maybe your RoutingTable sends the request over the corporate network instead of sending it over the Ad-Hoc network? Just a test: Unplug your corpnet, establish the ad-hoc connection and try again. If that works you would need to tweak the metric on the route for the ad-hoc network - or add a route that prefers the ad-hoc net for the iPhone connection.

Ahah, that worked.

As for 'tweaking the metric on the route for the ad-hoc network', how would I do that? I can disconnect my LAN cable each time but it'd be better if I didn't have to!

Actually, on googling for routing tables, that looks horribly complicated and I'm not comfortable mucking with settings to that level of detail - I have a good relationship with the IT guys in my firm and don't want to screw it up by breaking anything.

Thanks though, this is a good workaround.

Those relationships are very important to maintain :)
