YNAB Local Classes

Discussion about the Four Rules of YNAB, how and why they work, and what you need to do to implement them.

YNAB Local Classes

Postby jesse » Tue Jan 29, 2008 10:38 am

As YNAB has grown in popularity, the need for a new way to teach the methodology as well as the software has become more apparent. With the recent addition of being able to define real world accounts, it seems even more so.

New users arrive almost daily here on the forums and even with the helpful nature of the community here, it has been, at times, hard to keep up effectively.

Last summer two members of the forum, Steve Mudie and Erin Lowell, approached me separately about creating a class that could be held on a local basis where people could go and for a small fee, learn all about the 4 Rules of the YNAB methodology as well as have a face-to-face opportunity to ask questions. As it turns out, both Erin and Steve live in Maine and although they're a fair distance apart, they met and then set about working up a curriculum together.

What they have come up with is a two session class set one week apart lasting about 2 hours each session. Using a Powerpoint slide show as well as handouts they have developed, the focus of the class will be to teach the basics of budgeting based upon the YNAB Methodology. Included with the handouts are paper sheets that mimic the YNAB software such that even if someone does not have a computer, they can learn and implement budgeting into their lives to get ahead and stay ahead.

I'm pleased to announce that on February 5th the very first YNAB budgeting class will be held in North Berwick, Maine and will be taught by Erin. Two days later, on the 7th Steve will teach the same class in Farmington, Maine.

After those pilot classes have been held, our plan is to expand them as far and wide as there is interest. There are already some other forum members involved in the process and before long they too will be holding classes in their areas.

If you, or someone you know, is interested in learning more about either Erin's or Steve's class, then please send an email to classes [at] youneedabudget [dot] com and they will get right back to you with more detailed information as well as get you signed up if you want to take the class.

If you have any questions about the class then please post here.

I first want to say that is absolutely awesome. I almost fell over in my chair when I read this. My question is on the small fee would that vary from different locations where the class is to be held or will be their be one standardized fee? I have no problems with the fee though. Because what I can learn extra from this class I can benefit later in life. I just hope a class comes to Salt Lake City, Utah real soon.

Hi Juan,

Thanks, we're pretty excited too. :D

As it stands now it will be a flat fee. We are still evaluating the whole program and that may change.

We're in the very early stages right now so I can't make any bold predictions but as soon as we have news of value to share you'll find it here.

Wow, what a concept! Why didn't I think of that? Anyway, I'd be happy to expand to MN if we want.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the feedback. If anyone would like to sign up for the class I'm holding on the 5th, shoot me a private message. Love to have some YNABers in there.

:)

I'm actually taking a "intro to computers in business" class.. and one of our assignments is going to be to make a budget in excel... I might just show my teacher my budget on ynab and see what he thinks about that :) lol

I totally think you should show him YNAB Excel and say it was something you just threw together in an hour.

Ay carumba, Erin and Steve. Way to go and good luck on your first classes. I'm guessing they'll be a smashing success. I wish I was near one of you or could get to your lovely state at that time. I would be very interested in classes in the Chicago area.

Great idea, Steve and Erin. I'd come, but it's a bit of a drive from south central Texas. Instead, I'll send you out a big "howdy" (it's rodeo time right now) and wishes for success.

Along these lines, I am interested in "hiring" someone either locally (in Chicago) or on the phone (so they could be anywhere) to help me with setting up my YNAB. I am really struggling with just doing this via the online support.
If there is anyone out there interested in discussing the possible terms of this arrangement, please let me know.
Thanks so much.
