Wish me luck - start of Bufferland!!!!

Discussion about the Four Rules of YNAB, how and why they work, and what you need to do to implement them.

Wish me luck - start of Bufferland!!!!

Postby macduncan » Thu Oct 29, 2009 11:10 pm

Hi all...with today's pay I have reached bufferland!! I am so nervous and excited at the same time! I hope I do this right! I hear it is worth it!! Plus I paid off my minivan today a whole 10 months early!! Dave Ramsey and YNAB rock!

The one question I have is what happens when I get paid next month on the 15th? Does that go in as primary income for next month Nd I allocate that whole pay back in the buffer category?

Thanks all!

Bill

I'm assuming you marked this check as supplemental, and then budgeted it to your buffer category.

Next month, you can budget all the money out of your buffer category and make it available for your expenditures next month.

All the paychecks you receive next month will then be marked as Income: Primary, and will then become available in December.

Buffers are great!

After almost two years of using the software, I just made a decision to use my paycheck as a buffer for the next month. I get paid on the last day of every month and I've always marked that as primary income, which then gets used right away starting the next day. We had savings, but now I am recording my check on the 1st so it goes to the next month, so we already have part of next months income at the start of this month.

Hi there...quick update. It was so easy to make the budget up for the full month when looking at the last couple months! It was so fast!

The part I am more nervous about is I am used getting paid every two weeks and will just have to make sure I stay on top of updating the register!

It is so amazing to be able to see my Murphy Funds (aka Rainy Day but being all Irish I will go go for Murphy!). I can believe how much moneynwe were throwing away pre-YNAB!

Hi all...quick update...finished first month in Bufferland! What a difference! My November 15th paycheck came and I was like "oh yeah, payday which is an incredible feeling. Prevously I was so anxious and would wait for the check and rush into YNAB to do my next two weeks budget hoping something didn't pop up unexpectedly!

We actually had to ensure we kept the "pressure" on to watch the budgets as budgeting every two weeks really forced us to be diligent. It feels like a different pressure when you plan a month at a time as you have to make sure you don't burn through the budget too quickly!

The other great thing is it took only about 20 minutes to create my December budget! This tool Is amazing!

Bill

P.S...this is by no means bragging, I feel incredibly fortunate and want to share how YNAB is helping!

I know how you feel Bill. I went home for lunch today and saw that I had gotten our electric bill in the mail and then stopped and realized that I went online a couple of days ago and paid it. That was way before it got here. How cool is a buffer. Jessie, you're right, I don't know how I ever done without it. And yes, thanks to YNAB and it's methodology, if we choose to win with our finances, we can! Great job Bill!

Thanks Jeremiah! Awesome to hear about your stuff! I don't know how I did this before YNAB. Well let's just say I had overdraft charges!

Take care and YNAB it!
