When will new rules be implemented

Discussion about the Four Rules of YNAB, how and why they work, and what you need to do to implement them.

When will new rules be implemented

Postby mozzie61 » Mon Jun 28, 2010 7:11 am

When I joined the forum in early May, Jesse's blog update of 22 April had this to say about the 4 YNAB rules and their new order

We’re going to change the order of the Rules in the YNAB Methodology. You’ll see the change slowly rollout as we update the site, software, tutorials, etc.

Rule Two will be Rule One.
Rule Three will be Rule Two.
Rule Four will be Rule Three.
Rule One will be Rule Four.

We now have a situation where whenever the rules are mentioned in the forum YNABers either refer to them in the original order, or add to the confusion by saying something like Rule One (the new Rule Four), or Rule One (the old Rule Two) - confused myself just writing that :).

As a newbie I wasn't set in either order, and I appreciate the logic of making Rule One the new Rule Four. Of of the four rules the old Rule One is certainly the hardest to achieve for those who come to YNAB with little or no funds in reserve, and does have the potential to put people off. As someone who was living pay to pay with no reserves I just ignored that one (for now) because I could see how much sense there was in the other three rules.

From what I can see, other than in the forums there is no mention of these rule changes anywhere else such as Help or tutorials. Is it still in the master plan for these rule changes to occur? I appreciate there is a fair bit of work to get everything done, but having announced the changes it makes sense to implement them as quickly as possible so we can all start referring to them in the new order, and stop the confusion for new users who may not have seen the original blog article.

Just this morning I had to resort to referring to the "'Save for a Rainy Day' rule" and so forth. Awkward.

The Help section of the latest version of YNAB (3.1.6.2393) now has the rules in the new order. Looking forward to the web site being updated so we can stop comparing the old versus the new, and just refer to the rules.
