I have Windows XP & Office 2003 at work.
My sister has Windows XP & Office 2003 on her laptop.
I have Windows 2000 & Office 2000 at home.
Initial home base:
I created and have thus far edited my YNAB 4.0 .xls spreadsheets at work, where I did a full install of the .exe before first creating such a spreadsheet.
First time with a problem:
I tried to simply open my .xls on my sister's computer, like I was able to do w/ a spreadsheet made using version 3 last spring. It looked awful--none of the formatting of a normal YNAB spreadsheet like my Version 3 .xls files always preserved from computer to computer when I simply e-mailed myself the files.
Solution to first time with a problem:
I installed the .exe on my sister's computer when she wasn't watching. My .xls that I'd e-mailed myself was then able to open with proper formatting.
I grumbled that I'd now have to install a .exe everywhere I went instead of just opening an .xls file in Microsoft Excel.
Second time with a problem:
After more editing of my Version 4 .xls spreadsheet at work, I e-mailed myself a copy Friday and tried to open it today at home. I received the following error message:
'KitKatYNAB4.xls' cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding.
[Retry][Cancel]
Well, it wasn't some "server" problem--the file was in "My Documents" on my computer! And it wasn't "read-only"--I checked the file's Properties from Windows Explorer.
So I grumbled and downloaded the "For Office 97 to Office 2003" version of YNAB 4, installed that .exe, copied my .xls file over into the directory it'd created, and tried to open it.
Same error message!
Question:
What on earth is in the coding of YNAB 4's .xls files that makes them so hard to open in Office 2000 after they've been edited and saved in Office 2003?
I don't have this much trouble opening Word 2003 files I saved at work when I get home to my 2000 version of Word!
What's going on?
And, more importantly, what can I do get my budget open at home today?
Thank you,
KitKat
