Supplemental Doesn't Show in Budget

YNAB Basic was discontinued on December 31, 2009. You can still try your luck at getting questions answered here, but we all highly recommend you look at upgrading.

Supplemental Doesn't Show in Budget

Postby BreAn » Thu Sep 24, 2009 5:07 pm

I have had YNAB for a while but have never used it. Sad I know. But I'm finally ready to take control of my debt and money, especially since our income has gone down this year (sound familiar?).
Since I haven't reached Rule one yet, I am trying to label my inflows as Supplemental. However, when I look over at the budget, it doesn't show anything, and cannot actually make a budget. Is there something that I'm obviously doing wrong that I just don't see?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

Hi BreAn - are you just setting up?

There is a 'Getting Started Guide' available through the link in my signature for the Helpful Threads Library, but the first questions that come to mind are:

What date are you using for your supplemental income entries?
Which month are you looking in for your income entry?
Where are you looking for it? (it will be a the top of the budget page labeled "Available")
Did you download a trial version or a paid version? (If you opened it when you first got it and it was a trial, possibly the trial period has ended - but I would have expected a message to that effect asking you to buy if that were the case)

To enter a budget you click in the left hand cell for the month on the budget page and enter your amount. I remember it took me a while to figure it all out at the start - the idea of more than one 'page' to do anything wasn't familiar as I am spreadsheet-phobic

Welcome.

I'm just going to go through some things to check. I know it's hard when most of the tutorials are all aimed at Pro.

On the Overview sheet, you have your accounts set up (Checking, Savings, Cash, etc.)

On the Budget sheet, you have the categories to your liking.

On the Register sheet, you've entered the transaction with a September date, you've assigned an account (one of the ones set up on the Overview sheet) via the drop down/pop up lis. You've already stated that you categorized it as Supplemental income and entered it as an inflow.

Does all that check out?

 Sorry - I didn't even look at which forum I was in.

The only thing I know about the basic is that if the year showing in your overview is wrong, then you won't find what you're looking for.

I'll stand back and leave you to someone who knows what they are talking about...

My apologies if I've confused you more.

I kept reading over your post Rose (it showed up while I was typing) to see if you'd noticed that it was Basic. It actually still made sense and brought up a couple things I hadn't thought of. I'll translate into Basic-ese.

On the Overview sheet, make sure the Budget Year is 2009 (I don't know if it freaks out if it's not, but it can't hurt).

On the Budget page, make sure you're looking at the set of September columns. The column that lists the categories is stationary, but the monthly columns get hidden. Use the sideways 'elevator' at the bottom to make sure you're looking at September (assuming that that's when you entered your supplemental income for).

I also have basic. I changed my budget year to 2010 (from the current 2009) and yes nothing displays correctly as the others have stated.

So there are 2 things to check the budget year on the Overview page and secondly, the year for each entry on the register page.

If you've checked those 2 things and it's still not working let me know, and I'll try to help out.
