YNAB Basic was discontinued on December 31, 2009. You can still try your luck at getting questions answered here, but we all highly recommend you look at upgrading.

I've run out of register lines for 2009 in Open Office!

Postby rlurie » Sun Oct 25, 2009 10:14 am

Hi,
I am a long time YNAB user with Open Office on my Mac.
This year was my first full calendar year of input into the my Registry, and I recently reached the literal end of the Register (I think it allows for 1,000 entries).
Since this happened in mid-October, I've been condensing/combining Registry inputs (e.g. all my groceries for the month have been condensed into one line) for October, and I'm fine for this month. However, even with all this condensing, it's going to take a lot of rearranging to make it until the end of 2009, and I'm not sure what to do for Nov and Dec.
So, when exactly are they estimating that YNAB 3 will be out?
If it's sometime in late December, does anybody have any suggestions for how to add blank lines to the registry in 2009? If that's not possible, should I open a new version of YNAB for the last couple of months of 2009?
Thanks,
Rachel

I did this, but it was some years ago. I was using Open Office on Windows. The sequence I followed, if I remember correctly:

1) Take a backup copy of your file
2) Select the register sheet
3) Tools Menu -> Protect Document -> un-select the 'Sheet' option
4) Tools Menu -> Options -> Open Office Calc section -> View Subsection -> Tick the "Column/row headers"
5) Go to the last row that you have filled in on your register
6) Select the whole row by clicking on the row number on the extreme left hand side. Left clicking once should select the whole row.
(If you click a single cell, only that cell will be hi-lighted, which is not what you want)
7) Once the whole row is selected, right click the number and choose "Insert Rows". Repeat step 7 nine more times. This will result in 10 extra rows being
added.
8 ) left Click the number of the first of those new empty rows, then shift left click the last of the numbers. This will hi-light the 10 newly added
rows.
9) Again, right click the any one of those hilighted numbers and choose "Insert Rows". This time, 10 rows will be added. Repeating this will allow
you to quickly add rows in multiples of 10.
10) If you want, select 100 rows, and insert in batches of 100 ... you get the idea.

Finally, undo steps 3 and 4, and you'll be sorted.

Hopefully I haven't confused you, if anything it will probably be selecting the whole row (step 6). Shout back if you need clarification.
Don't forget to look at the first new transaction that you input on the register to make sure that it gets correctly deducted in the budget
sheet from it's appropriate category balance - just in case I overlooked something.

Good Luck!
B

p.s. The first step is the most important

Thanks, B.
I followed a version of your suggestion, and just unprotected the "sheet" and then manually added a bunch of rows. I think that will definitely get me through the next two months, and hopefully by then I'll have transitioned to YNAB 3!
Thanks again for your help,
Rachel

B (or anyone else out there),
I'm not sure if I just sent you a private message or not...
I was writing to let you know that even though I was successfully able to add rows to my register, none of the data I input in the new rows is translating to the budget page.
Any thoughts?
Thanks so much!

Hi Rachel,

Perhaps I may have got this a teeny-weeny bit wrong in my first post! (it was nearly midnight here). I just looked back through some older posts on this subject, and came across this:

To test things out, I am attempting to transfer all of my information from my old version 3.1 spreadsheet. There aren't enough rows in the spreadsheet by default to hold all of my transactions for a year. In 3.1, I just inserted some more at the bottom of the register, and this has worked fine so far.

In 4.0, after I add more rows to the bottom of the register, my transactions don't show up correctly in the Budget view. If I'm not going to be able to add more than the default number of transactions, 4.0 isn't going to work for me next year.

I'm using Excel for the Mac, by the way.

When you add more rows to the Register, make sure you copy the entire blank row and then Insert Cut Cells. There are two formulas hidden to the right of the Register that need to be there for everything to function properly :)

And you have the right idea that everything should be carried over. I always work left to right: Categories, Budgeted amounts, Register

By inserting new rows (like I suggested) we would have missed out on the two hidden formulas that Jesse mentioned. It's getting late here, so
rather than make another incorrect attempt, I am going to leave this until daytime tomorrow when my brain is a bit fresher. I'll try to get some
screen grabs as well, which might make it easier for you. Hopefully by this time tomorrow, I'll have full instructions posted.

'nighty 'night!

I think Jesse can probably do it quicker. I'll send him a PM, and I think then he just gets you to send him your file and takes care of it for you.
