Auto-Category feature when changing a transaction

Postby laurab » Mon Jan 04, 2010 10:41 am

I have a request - can you make it so that the categories are automatically entered when you change a Payee on a transaction? The reason this is important to me is that most of my checking transactions are imported from my bank as "check." When I change the payee, I'd love it if I didn't have to select the category each time. I love this feature when you enter a new transaction, and would think it would make sense for changing transactions as well.

So far I'm enjoying the new software. Great job! I have to admit that I got a little behind in YNAB pro last year (started with YNAB in 6/08) , so the new version has interested me in getting up to date! I LOVE how you can show only the transactions that need to be reviewed, and that you can limit the screen to 1m,3m, 6m, etc. Very nice new features!

One more thing (don't know if you'd call it a bug or not), but when I "unmatch" at transaction, it puts one of them at the very bottom of the register (not in order by date). At first I thought one had disappeared completely. Just a minor issue, though.

Use the payee settings. I think you get to them by right clicking on any payee (my virus scanner is going right now and everything is running painfully slow or I'd check). That has quite sophisticated options on how much to auto-fill when you select a given payee.

Thanks for your reply. That only works during the initial entering of a transaction. When you change a payee for an imported (or existing) transaction, the categories do not change to match the new payee. Like I mentioned earlier, most of my checking account transactions are imported with a payee of "check" and a blank category. I then have to manually change the payee and manually input a category.

If your imported transactions all come through with the same payee, I believe there is a function to swap payee and memo on imports. Taylor put that in because some banks put the payee in the memo field.

If your imported transactions all come through with both the same payee and the same memo, or payees and memos that are simply transaction numbers, you might want to think about whether import is saving you any labor over manual entry. You're having to manually edit all the transactions anyway; why not jut enter them as you spend the money?

Thanks for your reply. It's really not that big of a deal, because all I have to change is the Payee and Category. It's still easier than manually importing. I'm finding the new software to be very easy to navigate and quite fast.

Hi! Was anyone able to figure out how to make the categories automatically change when a payee is changed?
