Available to budget doesn't reflect account balance

Postby boydjj » Fri Jan 01, 2010 8:51 pm

My available to budget amount doesn't accurately reflect the current balance of my account. Luckily, this is an "overage" in my checking account - meaning my balance is $28.09 over the available amount - but I'd like to clear it up. I've checked for anything in other accounts that could be causing this, but there's nothing. All my previous non-zero months are over-spent, by an amount far exceeding this, so that's not the cause. YNAB is tracking the balances of all my accounts 100% correctly, so it's not like an adjustment there will help.

At this point, I'd like to just make an adjustment to get the available number back in sync with my account balances. Until then, I've got a "hidden" buffer of about $28, so it's not the end of the world. :D

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you've looked into it, but are you sure that

1. all your transactions in on-budget accounts have categories
2. all your transfers between on-budget accounts do NOT have categories
3. all your transfers from an on- to an off-budget account have a category on the on-budget end

?

Other than a non-zero somewhere in your past (sounds like you've imported from Pro), that's about all that would do it.

I actually upgraded from Basic and only know about my non-zeros by looking into what 3 says about my history. I'll look into what you suggested and report back. Thanks for the response.

Resolved. Had a Category in an on-budget to on-budget transfer. Thanks a bunch.

Just wanted to say thanks for updating with your solution, as it turned out to be the same problem I was having--I spent an hour looking for blank categories, didn't think of checking the transfers until I saw your post. Now I'm balanced again.

Well, my budget is balanced, anyway.

I thought to ballance your budget with your register(s) you have to look at more than just "Available to Budget".
You have to add...
1. Totals: Category Ballance
2. Available to Budget
3. Income available next month

All three of those should reflect you register ballance (or ballance of accounts on budget).

True. I infer from the context of the thread that the original poster was really looking at all of that, and expressed the thought inaccurately.
