Dropbox syncing - Am I doing something wrong?

Dropbox syncing - Am I doing something wrong?

Postby adavant1 » Mon Jun 25, 2012 3:02 pm

So I finally got YNAB 3 working on both PCs with my free trial 26 days left of it on the one pc and 22 days on the other.

Now I have the ynab budget file in dropbox. I save it form my laptop. get on my desktop and the changes aren't saved and I feel like I"m starting over every time I swap pcs. What's the deal?

What am I doing wrong?

Hi adavant1,

Are you definitely opening the same file on both computers ?

Save the file say on your laptop and check the date and time of the modified file in your Dropbox folder, now open this exact file on your desktop. Perhaps YNAB set to open a particular file and it is opening the wrong one.

Let us know.

1. You can't have them both open in YNAB3 at the same time and see the changes.
2. Is the same drop box account set up on both PC's?
3. Is it the same file in dropbox your looking at for both pcs?

Here is what I know works for us.

Open YNAB Budget stored in Drop box on PC1
Make changes.
Save Changes & close YNAB

Open YNAB on PC2 which is also linked to drop box.
See changes made from PC1.
Make changes
Save Changes and close YNAB

You need to have drop box on booth computers and they need to either be the same drop box account or a shared folder between 2 or more drop box accounts

Hi Adavant,
can I suggest grabbing YNAB 4 tomorrow (you'll get a whole new 34 day trial), and use the cloud syncing on it?
It Just Works, meaning you don't have to worry about which file is open or closed, and they update while you are using them.

Hi Ian

So when I get YNAB 4 tomorrow will my trial start over and it will automatically have the cloud option?

I thought of another question will we be able to import our ynab3 file into ynab 4?

Yes YNAB4 will automatically import your YNAB3 file.

Not long now, it's like Christmas Eve :-)

Yes, a new 34 days and it'll automatically have the ability to cloud sync. You'll need to choose cloud sync and walk through the set up, but you'll have that ability.

drop box

Postby joinaz95 » Fri Jul 13, 2012 8:50 pm

I just installed YNAB lite on my IPAD, and then realized I did not have dropbox on my PC. So I installed that, but then when I went back to IPAD, it says they can "not find YNAB on your dropbox, please set up YNAB for Dropbox using the desktop application". I am not very technical, not sure what to do next???

I am even more confused now, have downloaded dropbox to PC and IPAD, when I try to open ynab in dropbox on my pc , says I need updated Adobe Air, which I have done, and still get the same message on the IPAD, that they can not find it in my dropbox. I read somewhere in the forums that maybe I need to try .ynabsettings.yroot, so did that, and nothing seemed to happen. By now I have several files of everything, or so it seems and still can't get it on my IPAD. Seems like I am just making a mess of my pc with downloading all this stuff. Please help me! Thx!

one more bit of info, when I try to pull up YNAB 4.exe on the IPAD in dropbox app, it says unable to view file, this type of file can't be viewed. Not sure if that helps you any or not?

You need to install the YNAB Lite (or Full) app on your iPad in the conventional manner, so I'm not sure what you mean when you say you "try to pull up YNAB 4.exe on the iPad in Dropbox app".

You do not necessarily need the Dropbox app on your iPad for cloud sync to work, but you do need Dropbox installed on your desktop PC, and you do need YNAB 4 desktop version installed (trial or licensed). Once you have the desktop version installed and you either create a new budget file or convert a previous YNAB 3 one, the application should guide you through setting up cloud sync using Dropbox. You don't need to be looking anywhere in Dropbox or trying to execute files from within there. Once the desktop is set up for cloud sync open up the YNAB app on your iPad and you should be guided to link to your budget file and enter your Dropbox account details. If anything strange is happening with the iPad app on startup then an uninstall and reinstall may help.

Failing this contact the support team directly and they'll see you right.

Sounds like I am making this way more complicated than it is supposed to be. I have had YNAB4 licensed on my pc since you offered it, I installed dropbox on PC yesterday (not when I first got YNAB 4). I downloaded YNABlite on IPAD yesterday, deleted it today and tried again, hoping that would solve the problem. Still not seeming to work, but have to go to work. How do I reach the support team if I can't figure this out? Thx for your help.

If you work through each step you should be OK, but if not you can find the contact details for support through the Contacts link on the YNAB home page, or for your convenience follow this link.
