I want the beta too. Will you be providing a link? If so, when?

I have had this for many years. Will I get the beta pricing as well or not?

Very good that a beta is very close to being available for folks. It's a bummer though that I have to pay to access something that is in beta.

I'm a Mac user so I have no plans to buy a copy of the Windows version, that I cannot run, to beta test/try out software that may no meet my needs.

That being said, I look forward to the official, final, release of YNAB and hope that there is a trial version for those of use who prefer to try before we buy.

While I like the simplicity outlined, I must say I'm very disappointed at the same time. I've been reading time and time again, practically drilled into our heads that the pricing will be "fair" depending on when you purchased YNAB 2. Having purchased recently, I wish I had just waited for YNAB 3 as I was partly inclined to do. Of course, had the trial not been changed from 90 days to the ridiculous 15 days then I would still be on the trial and would have opted to purchase YNAB 3 straight up, rather than upgrade to it.

So will I purchase the upgrade? Sure. While I like the concept behind YNAB 2, I've never been impressed with the interface and YNAB 3 appears to address the register and interface shortcomings with a vengeance to become the software I was looking for all along. I'm just disappointed that I'll be spending "extra" on the software over was was promised/expected. I'd expect that from Microsoft, not here.

Haha, you suck. I saw the beta price and rushed to check YNAB to ensure I had the funds available, only to find out you were teasing me. :-)

Looking forward to the beta!

I think it's fair to be disappointed at the price. I know based on the prior posts from Jesse that I expected a tiered upgrade price based on when you purchased. I expected, having bought back in January, that I was going to be paying the full upgrade price. But I recommended to many people to go ahead and buy whenever since the upgrade price was probably going to be based on when you bought.

That said, I also understand the other side of the equation. If you're going to have a fixed upgrade price, you have to pick a date. Someone is going to be on the wrong side of that date. Doing tiered pricing based on purchase date can be messy, so a fixed date is really nice. And Jesse DID let everyone know that September 1st was the magic date a few weeks ago.

In the end, I think the product will be well worth the money, whatever price you pay. It's just a bit disappointing that the price couldn't be tailored a bit better for people who bought between say July 1st and September 1st.

I want to echo my disappointment at the pricing here. I also purchased YNAB Pro in the last couple months (Aug. 8th), knowing there was an upgrade coming. I seriously debated waiting to purchase, since it seems like purchasing software when you KNOW an upgrade is eminent is a bad idea. However, I made the decision to purchase, trusting that Jesse, and the YNAB team would make fair decisions regarding how to deal with those who recently purchased YNAB Pro. I also had received the impression there would be a multi-tiered upgrade pricing depending on how long ago you had purchased YNAB Pro. The $50 I paid for YNAB Pro only 2 months ago, combined with the lowest upgrade price available to me of $35, for a total of $85 is quite disappointing.

I will probably go ahead an pay the price to get the Beta version. The software has been very helpful to me. But I also have to say that my faith in the "fairness" of the YNAB team has taken a hit with this pricing structure announcement.

Invitations will go out based on when you purchased. People that purchased a long time ago will get earlier access. The phase will be fairly short from start to finish anyway, we just don't want to be overwhelmed.

Indeed. A "fairer" way of doing would have simply to increase the upgrade price $10/month (or $5 /2wks) up to the current max of $40. So if you purchased in August it would cost you $10, in July $20, etc. This gives a four-month transition period in which many people were undoubtedly weighing to purchase or not, and the people that are now feeling slightly burned. I'd have less problem paying $10 (or $5) extra because I missed the date by a few weeks than $40.

I'm a bit confused. Your posts have differing prices for the beta version. Which one is the real price? Also, what is the beta version? How does it differ from the public version? Will we be automatically upgraded to the public version once that comes out?

Count me in for some betatesting. I thought I had already signed up for this but can't find the e-mail anywheres. I did some beta testing for YNAB Pro so would enjoy the opportunity to test the next major revision.

CcTiger2, my apologies that you feel like the pricing structure isn't fair. This hasn't been easy for me, so I can only give you assurance that I sincerely tried to make the best decision possible. I weighed many different options and, in the end, felt that doing a tiered structure would be far more complex and still not solve the problem of date cutoffs (we would have created many groups, at each cutoff, that were disappointed they hadn't fallen into the cheaper bucket).

I should have been completely silent regarding the pricing in the past several months, instead of saying it would be "fair". I should have just said something like, "We're working on it" and left it at that. That was certainly a mistake that I won't make again. I appreciate hearing your feedback.

Jesse, the beta plan sounds good. If we want in, what do we do next? Will you be emailing out invitations?
