YNAB 3 Pricing Finalized

YNAB 3 Pricing Finalized

Postby jesse » Sat Oct 03, 2009 8:06 am

After much deliberation, and hearing the great feedback everyone provided regarding the YNAB 3 upgrade pricing, here's the official, definitive pricing.

What am I most excited about? The fact that we'll get you guys running YNAB 3 much faster than I had originally anticipated. It's not because Taylor is coding 70 hours per week (he is) or because we've hired more developers (we can't), or because I've learned to code and am now pulling my weight (I can't).

It's because we'll let you get into the beta :) (If you're not comfortable using beta software, no worries, the public version will follow shortly thereafter).

Retail
YNAB 3 will launch listed at $59.95.

Existing Customers wanting Beta Access (or just the lowest price)
For all existing Pro and Basic customers, you'll be able to purchase beta access for $34.95. Beta access is obviously limited to the beta period, so there's a bit of incentive here to get in early at this very low price. You can still purchase at this price if you don't want to run beta software and just want the lowest price possible. (YNAB Pro customers that purchased on or after September 1, 2009 will be included in this group at no cost, being grandfathered in because of their recent purchase.)

What is a beta program? It's a program that we've found (through internal testing with limited participants) to be stable enough to release out to a small subset of the general public. A few rules of thumb with betatesting: You should back up your file. That's it. Oh, and be vigilant in reporting bugs! If you don't want to or feel comfortable beta testing, you can still purchase at this introductory price and simply wait for the full version.

To be clear, anyone that purchases the beta will receive the full, public version once it's released.

When we're ready to launch, you'll be receiving an email if you're an existing customer.

Soon-to-Be Customers that Have Been Waiting Forever as well, that want Beta Access
For those people who are simply waiting for YNAB 3 and haven't purchased YNAB Pro or Basic, you'll be able to purchase beta access for $49.95 -- as long as you sign up on the YNAB 3 page.

You will also be receiving an email when we launch the beta.

Existing customers purchasing the final Retail product
For any existing Pro and Basic customers who did not want to take advantage of the lower price available during the beta period, the upgrade price will be $39.95. That price may be subject to change because it applies to purchases that could happen years from now. I obviously am going to give us pricing flexibility for transactions so far in the future :)

I feel like we hit a sweet spot here, where we can give everyone a substantial discount (almost 42 percent!) and get the software in your hands earlier by enlarging the beta pool. We will likely invite you to purchase access (based on how long you've been using YNAB) to the beta pool on a graduated basis so we're not overwhelmed. That phase will move quickly, so even if you just purchased, you won't be waiting too long once the beta officially opens.

And MAN you guys should see how the search feature works in the register. And the fact that split transactions aren't opened in a dialog box, but simply right inline. Or that you can add a check # column, take away the memo column, have a running balance column... (the Register has been getting some major TLC as of late).

Will those who purchased after Sept. 1, 2009 be able to get into the beta at no cost? I was unsure what you meant by being "grandfathered in".

I am sooooo ready to beta test YNAB 3 on an iMac PowerPC G4 running OSX 10.4.11. BUT...is the price for YNAB Basic users "the best you can do?" ^_^

Great news and like everyone, can't wait.

I have just moved the money into my YNAB 3 catergory reading for buying the BETA.

I have been using YNAB and Microsoft Money 05 for a long time, old habits die hard, but my bank are withdrawing the update service here in the UK, from the 23/10/09, so with YNAB 3 around the corner, the timing could not be better.

Sounds good Jesse.

So, did I understand this properly that you guys will actually be sending users an "invite" for these discounts?

This is all-around excellent news. I'm glad to see that you've come out with a simple pricing/upgrade policy.

What I really want to know - is the beta currently available & where? Or do we just wait for an email announcing that?
