YNAB You Need A Budget

I just upgraded to the latest build of YNAB 3 and kind of skipped the screen with the release notes. Is there any other place I can view the information about what's changed in the latest version? This seems like it may be a good thing to add to the Help, unless it is there already and I'm just missing it.

Greetings, Kenny, what is the number of the build that you just upgraded to? As far as I know, the release notes have previously appeared only at the time of the download on prior builds. I agree that it would be a good idea to have this info accessible at other times than just at download (especially while still in beta) so I will PM Mudie and see what he could do.

Never mind. Found the original release notes announcement. I'm still going to put in a feature request to include at least the latest version release notes in the help file or wherever it makes sense.

Greetings, Kenny, where did you find the original release notes announcement? Also, were you prompted to download the latest build 0.9.7.2043 automatically on opening YNAB3, or did you need to click a link to get it? (Was YNAB3 0.9.6.2016 resident on your computer prior to the dowload, or was it the version with diagnostics enabled on download 0.9.6.2015?) By the way, I have already sent Mudie a PM request to house the release notes in a place where they are generally available to everybody, so I may have saved you a step.

This page has the release notes for all versions of YNAB 3 and will be updated as new versions arrive.

ETA: Please note that that list will only contain the versions up to the current public version. I'll see what I can do to get the newer private beta versions listed as well.

I saw the email saying there was a new version available and clicked on the link. It went to the Fogbugz and ended up with some kind of error - I assume just because I hadn't signed up for an account (bad beta tester, bad).

So I just fired up YNAB and it said there was an update available which I snagged immediately. I had the time to read this version has huge speed improvements and accidentally launched the new version before I read the rest of the release notes.

I haven't worked with it a whole lot, but loading the accounts & budgets as well as the general startup do seem snappier. The Accounts, Budgets, and Reports splash screens while those sections load the first time is a very nice touch.

I must be missing something. I haven't gotten an email regarding an update, and when I tell YNAB 3 to check for updates, I get a message that none are available. My version is 9.6.2016.

Is the new version only available to the beta-test team?

Yes, the recent release is in the closed beta series. It has some improvements, but it also has some stuff that was working before that is broken now. Taylor will want to fix the broken stuff before he turns out a new public beta release.

Can a forum be created, which is closed to the public, which outlines the current set of bugs/enhancements that is planned for the next public release? And with that list a "goal date" for the release.

We promise not to hold you strictly to the list/date - but it would help in letting us know there is momentum moving forward. There are still some significant user experience improvements that I've seen reported (and see myself) that are needed to make this tool as efficient as it markets itself to be. Knowing when to expect updates means I don't have to do random checks and be disappointed. If I knew it was a month out I can live with that, and it would make things easier in the time between.

If there is already a spot for this, I apologize, I just couldn't find it!

Hi everyone,

Your timing is great. We are very close ("days" away) to another public release, and I apologize that it's been a while since our last one. We're improving a lot under the covers, and it's taken me longer than I would have liked to get this new version out the door.

You'll be happy to know that the next version of YNAB addresses the issue of the release notes not being visible! We did three things:
1) Firstly, we improved the update dialogs so that the release notes are much more visible before you click the "Download" button. You now get a big window to scroll through, with real, readable notes.
2) Secondly, when YNAB 3 restarts after installing the update, the same release notes will come up on startup to show you exactly what you can expect from the new version.
3) And lastly, there is now an option under Help->Release Notes that will bring up the release notes at any time.

Also, we are taking some steps in the next few days to make our development process more transparent, and to give you a chance to know what's coming down the pipe. That way you won't have to wait for the new releases to know what has changed! It will probably take the form of a developer blog where I can not only show you forthcoming release notes, but also discuss some new features in detail. Stay tuned...
