Brainwave - iPhone app feature

YNAB 4 discussion should happen here.

Brainwave - iPhone app feature

I think the iPhone app would be infinitely better if you could edit the budgeted amounts AND see the monthly status flowing into next month.

It would almost make it a fairly functional as a standalone app and may even satisfy iPad users until the real app comes along.

Unless there are rigidly separate development teams for the iPhone and iPad (which I doubt), every minute of development on the iPhone app means the iPad app will be a done minute later.

Besides coding time, I wonder if there isn't a business imperative to avoid adding too much functionality to the iphone app. The $5 app price point makes sense as an accessory to the $60 mother ship, but if the mobile app gets too close to being able to stand on its own, then customers might start wondering why they need the desktop program at all, yet also balk at the steep price increases that would become necessary in the mobile version if it were all that some customers wanted.

Makes sense, but since the mobile app is inherently dependent on the desktop app and its stated purpose is to enter transactions away from the desktop, it seems unlikely that it's going to turn into a mobile version of the desktop app.

Ynab has said they plan to make the mobile app fully functional and that it is somewhere on the radar. When, who knows. It sounds like the iPad app is a high priority.

There at least were plans for direct connect, too.

I think the most there has been is discussions about direct connect.

They have made a blog post saying they plan on making the ipad full featured standalone, and adding the ability to do everything on the mobile apps as well.

I have never seen a commitment to direct connect, though.

We ARE working on direct connect with banks and have high hopes for a very directly-connected 2011 :)

That's definitely changed now :)
We aren't working on it, but we do think about it from time to time.

If you guys could direct connect to major card issuers -- Discover, Citi, AMEX -- and investment houses -- Vanguard, Fidelity -- I could end my life of double entering things in Quicken.

Oh well, it's good typing practice, I guess.
