Not happy with YNAB 4

Postby m8cb0y » Sat Jun 30, 2012 1:51 pm

Subject line says it all.

Likes of YNAB 3 (issues in YNAB 4):
  • Look and feel (alternating lines in budget view, font clarity, didn't take up too much space on screen, window shrinkage with budget columns)
  • Local help file
  • Simplicity

Dislikes of YNAB 3 (solved in YNAB 4):
  • Syncing between devices, cumbersome in 3, still waiting to see in 4 (yes, I'm pointing my fingers at YOU, Apple!)
  • Lack of search function across accounts

I have reverted back to YNAB 3. Took a bit of time because I had to copy my changes from YNAB 4 back over to YNAB 3, but I did it. The major sticking point with YNAB 4 is that I can only sync desktop computers and my wife's android phone. With YNAB 3, I can sync everything using Dropbox and Wifi syncing. I had already been recording my transactions at point of sale. Can't do that with YNAB 4 and sync due to issues with the dictatorship called Apple. In other words, YNAB 4 is not functional for my family.

I am looking forward to going back to YNAB 4 despite some of my dislikes. However, can't do that until syncing is restored.

Oh, and WHAT is up with YNAB 4 preventing me from storing my local file to Dropbox? Really? It is a folder on my computer like any other. This is a major FAIL point for anyone wanting to do local syncing. Worked just fine in YNAB 3. Why the restriction with YNAB 4?

So really this thread should be titled "Temporarily not happy with YNAB 4 as a result of Apple delaying the iPhone app"?

Eh? Apple always review software - the problem was releasing YNAB 4 before the app was ready. I am thoroughly enjoying the trial of YNAB 4, and if the App and sync work as advertised, I will probably move back from Moneywell 2. The YNAB team know they should have waited, so lets stop this silly Apple bashing.

Or to be accurate, 'Temporarily not happy with YNAB 4 as a result of releasing the desktop software before the app was ready'.

+1 That is very true. I would have been pretty upset if the release of YNAB4 was delayed due to Apple. Very glad to be a Windows / Android user

I'm as anti-apple as anyone and bemoaned my DH's company-issued iphone coming into our house, but really, this sounds like what I've been hearing from the back of my minivan the last few days...gotta love 12 hour road trips with 4 kids!

It would have probably made more sense to wait until everything was good to go for everyone....even I could admit that. It's not what happened though and this time android users aren't the ones waiting. It's just one of those things that hopefully teach both patience *and* graciousness.

Yea, I know the world doesn't revolve around Apple (yet ;-)), and yes, I know I shouldn't bash a good program for just one bad "apple".

That said, the overall functionality just doesn't work for my family at this time. I WANT to like YNAB 4, but even my dear wife said something felt 'off'. And I am willing to make sacrifices to get my hands on cloud sync (still trying to convince her to buy it for Android, but she is up in arms on the fact that splits don't work on android). Don't even get me started on how much my wife (re: android user) is gloating over the issues I am having for using an iPhone.

I will still recommend YNAB to anyone I talk to about budgeting. Shoot, just sent a glowing review to the Chief TWiT (if you know what this is, then you know ;-)). AND, I think I may have my mother ready to buy a copy.

So yes, I have expressed some 'temporary' reasons for not liking YNAB 4. But for once, this tech head is going to wait until some of the bugs are worked out before jumping on the wagon with everyone else. Think I've finally lost my 'early adopter' attitude.

Hey, I resemble that remark! As a proud owner of entirely too much Apple hardware, I have the right to bash on it

As an fyi, my wife is running the iPhone beta version and it runs great! You'll be very happy when it officially gets approved and released.
Been there. Done that. Got the YNAB T-shirt!

I would love to see YNAB mentioned on TWiT.tv some time. Maybe if someone calls in to the radio show and asks about good budgeting software I will throw it out there in the chat room.

Bitsty is right about this: this is not Apple's fault. Although we're waiting on them, I don't want to point fingers or call them names. They can take a long time to review apps and we knew the risks when we decided to start the launch countdown. We got unlucky in that this has taken quite a bit longer to approve than we though it would, but again, we knew that could happen. By the day of launch, it would have been 7 business days in their hands, and 98% (as I recall) of app updates were being approved in 5 days at that time. So if looked like a small risk. In the end we made the call that even if we were wrong, we wanted YNAB 4 and Android apps in your hands now even if it meant you would have to wait a bit to use the iPhone with it. I don't regret the decision we made. Dont get me wrong. We are terribly disappointed you can't sync with the iPhone yet. We are at the mercy of Apple here, and we wish they they would approve our darn app so you could see how awesome it is, but we are responsible for the decision to launch. But its good to know: Sometimes you can end up in the 2%. :)

With regards to the comment about local budgets in Dropbox in the original post, allow me to explain. If a budget is in Dropbox, and YNAB has cloud sync enabled, the budget is able to be cloud synced. If a budget is not in Dropbox, it's not cloud synced. We call those local budgets. We didn't want to have a concept of "well yes this budget is in Dropbox, and yes I have cloud sync enabled, but I don't ever want to see this budget on my other devices so I want to call it local". It's quite edge case, and we are trying to give a very easy to understand set of abstractions here. If you want your budget in Dropbox, it's not "local" according to YNAB anymore. If we did allow for that fuzzy abstraction, we would end up with some very angry people the other way: "I disabled Cloud sync for this budget and made it local. But then I discovered it was still in this 'cloud thing!" I hope that helps. Let me know if I am misunderstanding your scenario though. We might not have considered everything.

P.S. Have I mentioned you're going to freaking love cloud sync with your iPhone?
