Not limiting the field to numbers would be nice, too.

Thanks

It would be nice to have a field for check numbers. I wish that YNAB could match the checks I manually enter to the ones from my bank import. The checks frequently take two weeks or more to clear, and it is a real pain to get the two to match up. Maybe having a check number field would make it easier for YNAB to find the matches--I get the feeling that the program only looks back a few days for a match. I would like to be able to enter checks in as I write them, as they are pretty much the only type of transactionthat does not clear immediately. If I wait for the bank to get them, my YNAB balance always shows too high. If I put them in rather than waiting for the download, it is a hassle. So, I vote for the check number field, or at least some better way to match imported transactions.

I am voting for check numbers not for my own personal use, but because part of the goal of these upgrades is to attract new customers as well as please existing customers. I noticed on the amazon reviews that a bad review was about this very topic, and that person was going back to Quicken. Granted, the thrust of the program is to focus on the rules and help people to implement them, but some people don't like reconciling manually (like I do as I'm focusing on a strict budget) and since you've incorporated the ability to incorporate bank statements it seems to make sense to incorporate a field for check number as an option. It might be that that be an option in checking accounts only. Savings accounts and Loans obviously don't need that feature.

Thanks,
Jennie

you know what...

Why not allow their to be extra fields? allow members to use some of these fields... but then allow them to not be used. Require that the date, amount, and category be shown... but give users the ability to create any other fields they need?

If its an option that could be turned off per account (defaults to off?) then I would be quite happy. I doubt I would use it, but then I don't really use cheques, but I can see why others would.

I am a little afraid that the register would start to become a bit cluttered but if it is optional then that isn't an issue...

My 2 cents/pennies :)

I voted NO.

I just put my checking number in brackets e.g. [6530] as the first thing in the the memo fields then type the description/notes and have no troubles locating checks easily. My preference is to keep it simple. My initial worry is it will get too cluttered per register line.

My bank splits my checking account statement, putting the physical checks in a different section from the other income/outflows (specifically, the amounts I pay through their online system). Adding a check number field would help me when it's time to balance my checkbook.

Please, please, please. Yes, yes, yes. 1,000 times yes. Having a check number field would help with reconciliation with my bank, sorting for transactions, running reports based on items that I actually wrote a check for, etc. There are tons of reasons that I can see for the Check Number field. That same field could be used to notate ATM transactions, Debit card transactions, EBT transactions, etc.

:!: YES for sure - a check number field is important for balancing checkbook statements. Also, having an automatic check number to the field might be good.

Maybe make it an optional field next to the checkmark?

Hope you will consider the check number feature - this is one feature I feel is really missing from your program.

Good news!

YNAB 3 will have a check number field for certain! :)

The best part is you'll be able to add and drop columns as you need them (Check # will be one of those columns) so if you don't want the check numbers field you don't have to use it but if you do, there it is! :D

This. Most every bank I have had, when sending out a statement, puts the checks in separately from other debits. So being able to split them out when having a register view makes reconciling a ton easier.

In Money, you could even have a view that showed them broken out separately. Deposits in one part, ordered by check number in another, and then the rest of debits by date.

Often, ALL you get on these is a check # and an amount in the chekc number area. Making it even more important to be able to FIND that check number

Oh and you CAN have checks in other types of accounts than checking accounts -- its just not as frequently used. I've gotten checks with credit cards in the mail and even had a small checking book for savings accounts

princessschreffler,
Thanks for reminding me of a very important point... My bank statement is actually divided into the following sections: deposits, checks, debits, and electronic withdraws (almost all online bill pay items). So when balancing my records against the bank statement, I pretty much have to add up all the totals to make sure I got it right.

What I did back when I was using MoneyDance was put the check #'s for actual checks of course, and then DEBIT as the check # for things I used a debit card for and then ONLINE for things I paid for online. This was actually pretty handy. But while I was trying to find a better personal finance program pre-YNAB, I found a couple (can't even remember which ones) that couldn't import my data. One was because they didn't allow non-numeric values for check numbers and the other didn't allow duplicate check numbers.

I'm hoping YNAB 3 doesn't force check numbers to be unique or numeric.

I voted for this but want to qualify my vote. This is useful in checking accounts but not needed otherwise. Therefore, it should be implemented in such a way that it is specific to those accounts. It is an annoyance in Quicken that this field is present (and empty) in non-checking accounts.

It would be nice, really nice, to have the option to rename fields and to add some and to take certain ones away. I wonder what YNAB3 will be able to do?
