RSS feed for the forum

Postby wassupdoc » Fri Jun 27, 2008 9:58 am

Ok it's official, I am now addicted to the forum and while I can subscribe to individual topics which will just let me know via email that a new response has been added, what I would really love is an rss feed so that I can add it to my google reader. Anything to soothe my addiction to the forums :D

I've never seen any web forum that had an RSS feed--I don't know how RSS works, so I don't know if it's just not possible with the way forums work, or if it's just something nobody's bothered to program yet. I'd be interested in one as well, if such a thing can be done.

I thought we had one for a little while - but that was back when I was terrified of RSS, so I have no idea if it worked or not. I think it must have, because a few people were disappointed when it disappeared.

Hi,

I would have to agree that it would be nice if something would be done to navigate this web forum. I find it very helpful to read through the posts when I can find them. Having a way to navigate from one topic to the next without having to go back to the top of the forums would be nice, or a way to go between next/previous topics.

However, I would like to mention that lifehacker.com recently mentioned freeware that makes webforums work somewhat like an RSS reader. It's called "Web forum Reader" http://www.chemtable.com/WebForumReader.htm. I've tried it out and it works pretty good, although a little hard to set up.

We had one and then upgraded the forums and lost that functionality. I've struggled finding a mod to get the RSS again. Though it's been several months since I looked -- maybe since then the void has been filled.

It appears as though it has. :D

I can't vouch for how easy it is to install or comment about any bugs it may have but it seems to work just fine on this forum via their feed link in both Firefox and Google Reader.

For whatever it's worth, most of the forums to which I subscribe have them. It's a very nice feature. Most of those boards are vBulletin-based. I am pretty sure the RSS feed is one of the packages/mods that comes with vBulletin. But I am not familiar with phpBB.

Ok Steve.

HELP

Maybe I'm just panicking over nothing, but I've been using this RSS thing since you twisted my arm over in the other thread, and keeping up with the news (bliss - but are they really sure they want to move to Mars?), the YNAB stuff Jesse, Casey and Emily do, plus one blog from someone who posts nearly as infrequently as I do.

I went to this link to see how it works, and it's scary. It's like the first RSS stuff I did with IE7 and I don't like it.

Is that just because I went through that link, and if I put that page link into Google Reader will it come up just like my other ones do? Neatly summarised with just a headline in the right box, and when I click the article headline it will bring me to the whole thread?

"Disembodied" comments removed from their threads are very un-nerving for me.

Yes! :D

Or, if I could talk you into using Firefox  , then you could have a neat little link at the top of your browser like below, that alerts you when new stuff has been posted and even gives you a peek at it when you hover over it with your mouse. 8)

I have to agree, it's hard to follow what's going on that way but it's unbeatable for a quick here's-what-has-been-posted-recently glance that you can always just head off directly to the forum for.

 Oh NO, you won't get me to try Firefox again - it took me ages to get that out of my computer (if I remember rightly we reformatted the XP and that quit it entirely, but I have no desire to reformat my Vista just at the present time). Besides, I get a few lines of the text when I select the headline anyway in Google Reader, so maybe it's that, not Firefox that provides it.

ETA: I've added it in, and that's great - only now I have two feeds called YNAB - how can I rename one?

AND: Will I miss edits? Do they provoke a feed update?

I really wish you weren't so far away Rose, as I think I could help ease your fears if I were to sit down with you and show you some things on your personal confuser.

Use the "Feed Settings..." button on the top right of the Google Reader page when you are selected on the feed that you want to rename.

WairereRose wrote:AND: Will I miss edits? Do they provoke a feed update?

The feed update frequency relies upon various factors and is not instantaneous but will include any edits I expect but they will may appear as a new post altogether.
