Flow of split transaction amount entry

Postby noelnjen » Thu Oct 16, 2008 8:52 pm

I am new YNAB Pro user and I really like its the simplicity and intuitiveness.

One thing in particular that I really appreciate is how you can enter a transaction amount, choose to split it and then auto-distribute any unassigned amount (sales !@#$) to the transaction split amounts.

However, I would like to see the data entry flow when seeking to utilize the auto-distribute feature improved. Currently, as you are entering the various components of a transaction the Category column (where you specify a split) comes before the Amount. So in order to utilize the auto-distribute feature you must jump from the Date to the Outflow and then back the Category.

What I would like to suggest is to have the ability to optionally enter a Transaction Amount at the top of the Split Transaction dialog box.

Thanks.

I second this. I've done it a couple of times and in both instances, I had to cancel out of the split dialog box because I forgot to enter the total amount first.

I also think that Memo should come after the amount. But that's just me.

Btw, speaking of split transactions, I got a very pleasant surprise tonight. I was logging my wife's receipt today, which showed a discount off the total amount. I was like, uh oh, I'm not sure if YNAB would handle this. And guess what, it did. It decreased the individual items proportionally. Beautiful!

Please tell me you're considering (or will consider) this for YNAB 3 (even if not the first release). Or if the columns will be movable (I forget whether they will be), then I could simply move the inflow/outflow columns before the category. Then, I wouldn't forget to enter the total amount before the split information.

Thanks,

I've learned to enter the amount and then back tab to the split, but would prefer it if the fields were reversed. Or if the Ctrl-S that Quicken uses for opening the split window (from any field of the transaction) were enabled I could use that instead of the back tab.

I'll jump on the bandwagon. I go over to the outflow and enter the number first and then shift-tab to go backwards, but it would be a great timesaver if the workflow in that process had you enter the amount first. Another option would be to let you enter the outflow on the split screen.
