I had one of the first Palms.. but they need the Pre to save the company... I have a Palm Z22 and gave it up to get the Iphone.. The treos were ok but there is no comparison..In two years I could consider the Pre if it takes off..
Documents to go will work with Excel files - it "should" work.. However if you have a small screen then its a pain scrolling around..
It took about 2 years for the iPhone to build up enough apps in its store to validate all of the "There's an app for that, too" commercials that just started to air this year.

Palm would do well to include some sort of backwards compatibility, even if it's in the form of a Palm OS 5 emulator that runs within the new Web OS. Given how cheap memory is these days and what I hope is going to be a much more robust CPU in the Pre, I don't think that is out of the question. Heck, despite all of the PC hating that goes on in the Linux and Mac communities, there are Windows emulators that allow people to run PC programs on both of those platforms.
I'll just hang onto my retro Treo which does everything I need it to do (and with HandBase and Shadowplan on there, I can MAKE my own apps for just about anything) and pay T-mobile just $6/month for web access until I see if the Pre will be worth the switch in carriers, the extra $$ for the full data plan, and the cost of the unit.
