Don't want to make a fuss

Postby pksublime » Tue Jun 12, 2007 12:20 pm

So I've just been banned from the Dave Ramsey fan forum http://www.LivingLikeNoOneElse.com because of my opposition to their new rule about links in signatures. As such I'll discontinue my practice of having them in my signature here. I don't want to be banned from here too.

When the new rule was made at the other forum I immediately removed the links (complied) but stated that I thought nothing was wrong with it. The forum "Super Moderator" chimed in started a debate. This action broke his own rules, then someone else jumped into the fight, again another breaking of the rules. They supposedly have a points system for infractions but I was never given any before being banned. I was also not banned temporarily, but banned permanently.

edit: removing inappropriate call to action

Jesse,

While I happen to think this is a non-issue, because I also have a link in my signature it would be appreciated if you would make a call on whether these should be allowed here or not?

Perhaps you could have a pinned 'rules' topic on the board for newbies too, so that it doesn't get lost in the discussions.

The way the signatures are delineated from the message at this board I believe makes it quite clear where the help stops and the 'sell' starts.

My personal feeling is that when budgets are tight any optional (these are not 'high pressure sales techniques we're using) and legal method of bringing in extra income should be used, however I will stand by whatever ruling you make and remove my link also if required.

pksublime, sorry for the problems at the other forum. I haven't visited that one and probably won't.

I didn't chime in when this sig ad thing was brought up on another thread, but everywhere I look I get an ad in my face. On TV; billboards; friends' email from Google, Yahoo, and Hotmail; embedded even in the weather forcast on a local station; on all the news webpages; in the water bill; in bank statements; flyers; everywhere.

I really don't want to see any ads, and especially I don't want to see them here.

This is for Bodhi's benefit since I know that both pksublime and prettyroses already know, but there is another thread that talks about this subject that you may want to check out.

On another note I'm sorry to here that you were booted pksublime. Personally I would wave a good riddance their way over this whole thing.

One of the reasons I like this forum so well is that 99% of us are so civil. Getting into wars over such inconsequential (in the greater scheme of getting out of debt/tackling money issues) issues as to whether or not someone is using a link in their signature is foolish to me. The end result of which is that the overbearing "Super Moderator" bans you?!

Big flipping hairy deal, someone has an unobtrusive link in the last few lines of text at the bottom of their posts that is below a clear horizontal line to denote that it is not part of their post.

Sorry, more important issues to deal with than that in my camp.

Add to that that you don't even have to view signatures on their forum, default is OFF and you must turn it ON. Thought that might change with the new rule too.

I decided that it probably is a good thing because they were all telling me ridiculous things and putting me down for my decisions in life. Decisions that I was conscientiously aware the outcome and ready to make it work. It's true, my current budget requires me to "grow into it" but that's OK for me because I'm 23 years old, just starting a FT professional job, and going to be married in less than a year. Why should I be taking advice and listening to people that are twice my age or more and in the same boat I am still (or worse!?)

We have the luxury of still being a pretty small forum, so rules probably aren't really that important at the moment. I would probably PM people if their signatures were really big, obnoxious, or distracting. I've been to some forums where the signatures are these massive images and it borders completely ridiculous.

I wouldn't want to ban links in signatures.
But it does affect how I feel about a poster when they have obnoxious signatures, whether that involves huge pictures, movies, obnoxious quotes or sponsored links.

What you put in your signature is how you are representing yourself to the world, and people will make judgements about you depending on how they feel about the things you put in your signature.

Really!?

It's an option and they still dumped you. Oh that's too much.

No doubt, but you need to consider working with them to iron out similar money issues since even if they are still messing up since they should have the wisdom of years to help them along.

I know I do and uh, yes, I'm twice your age. :(

Now you've done it Steve! Half the board is now going to ignore you and your advice. :D

Of course, the same could be said by the older users -- why listen to a kid?

im with pksublime on the age part, I am only 23, I have similar feelings about said website and stopped using it because they are really a bunhc of arrogant know it alls

far to often I see a simple question, that could have been answered with some various options, where the person is hounded into one way, and then the mobs join in

at least at this forum we have many opinions and not just mob-think

Well I'm not telling anybody how old I am, but what I do have to say is that it looks like a bunch of you are much smarter than I was at 23. :D

My son turns 14 in August, and last month I was mistaken for a school girl. I asked him what we would do if we were out together and someone took us for boyfriend/girlfriend

 Now that would be fun to watch.

But I don't imagine your son would think it's so funny.
