Using YNAB on Steam

What is Steam?

Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation. It is used to distribute games and related media online, from small independent developers to larger software houses. In October 2012, Valve expanded the service to include non-gaming software of which YNAB was one of the first 6 non-gaming titles the Steam community greenlit for inclusion there.

Do I need to install Steam to try or use my copy of YNAB?

You only need to install Steam if you purchase YNAB through Steam instead of directly from our store.

Do I have to always run this through Steam?

You have to run YNAB through Steam at least once. After that, the key you acquire from your purchase on Steam will work fine with a copy you download here.

Can I use my Steam purchased license on my other computer?

Yes! You can retrieve your key by way of Help>About>Copy Activation Key to Clipboard in the YNAB menu of your Steam purchased copy to then use on your other installation.

How will the upgrades work if YNAB is bought through Steam?

In order to be eligible for the discount to a major paid upgrade version when we release one (YNAB 5, 6, etc.) you'll need to provide proof of purchase to us (your Steam email receipt will suffice when the time comes) as we don't have any access to Steam sales records. Any free updates (4.x, 5.x, etc.) are automatically downloaded and applied by the Steam client software.
