Progress Updates

March 4, 2010: We’re making great progress on the iPhone app! We’re on our 12th build of the alpha right now and it’s syncing nicely to the internal build of YNAB 3 that we have running. I’ve realized, in using it this past month, that I should have offered a mobile solution a LONG time ago. It’s a great psychological win to record transactions as they’re incurred.

That said, I can’t give a timeline on the release for two reasons, 1) I’d be wrong and 2) we have no idea how long it would take Apple to approve the app.

February 17, 2010: Taylor’s been working on the YNAB 3 side of synchronization — trying to make it as seamless as possible. The iPhone app itself has gone through some bug fixes and a bit of experimentation with how we present lists of transactions (we like the tiled view vs. the grouped view I think). Things are coming along nicely.

January 14, 2010: Have gotten used to having YNAB in my pocket all the time. It feels good to have awareness increase. If putting a receipt in your pocket is keeping you “psychologically close” to your transactions, then recording it before you walk out the door is orders of magnitude more effective than that.

December 31, 2009: Used the iPhone app to record the purchase of a gift card at Costco. The lady at Costco checked off my receipt, I recorded it in my iPhone, and chucked the receipt in the trash on the way out. On import of a YNAB 3 file, overspending isn’t handled correctly so budget balances are off. To be fixed soon.
